Merdeka Tournament or Pestabola Merdeka is a friendly football tournament held in Malaysia to commemorate the Independence Day and mainly played at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. The competition bears the Malay word for independence. The Merdeka Tournament was once regarded as the 'Grand Old Lady of Asia' where top teams from football playing nations would love an invitation to the tournament. As of 2022, it has been held 40 times, and decreasingly in recent decades. Matches in Merdeka tournament considered International "A" matches by FIFA.

The 2006 Merdeka Tournament is the 38th editions of the Merdeka Tournament and was held on 23 to 29 August 2006. This is the first edition not played at Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur which is being refurbished. All matches played at Shah Alam Stadium in Shah Alam, Selangor.

The 40th Merdeka Tournament was played from 15 to 25 October 2008. The tournament was won by Vietnam, who defeated Malaysia 6-5 on penalties in the final.

Inder Singh is an Indian former football player and captain, manager and administrator. He played for Leaders Club (Jalandhar), JCT Mills and the Indian national team as a forward. He began his senior professional career with Leaders Club in 1962 and moved to JCT Mills in 1974. Playing for Punjab in the Santosh Trophy, he finished the 1974–75 tournament with 23 goals, a record that still stands. He was included in the Asian All Stars XI team in 1967 and 1968. He retired as a player in 1985.

The 1962 Merdeka Tournament was the fifth edition of the annual football tournament hosted by Malaya. It took place from September 8 to September 19 with nine participating nations.

The 1972 Merdeka Tournament was held from 12 July to 29 July 1972 in Malaysia. Twelve teams from 11 nations participated.

The 1971 Merdeka Tournament was held from 4 to 21 August 1971 with 12 participating teams.
