The 1965 NCAA University Division Wrestling Championships were the 35th NCAA University Division Wrestling Championships to be held. The University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming hosted the tournament at War Memorial Fieldhouse.

Contents

Iowa State took home the team championship with 87 points and two individual champions.

Yojiro Uetake of Oklahoma State was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler and Charles Tribble of Arizona State received the Gorriaran Award.

Arena-Auditorium is a 11,612-seat multi-purpose arena in Laramie, Wyoming. The arena opened in 1982 and has since been the home of the University of Wyoming Cowboys basketball team, as well as home to the Cowgirls basketball team since 2003. It replaced the previous home of Cowboys basketball, War Memorial Fieldhouse.

Everett F. Shelton was an American basketball coach in the 1940s and 1950s. Shelton played quarterback for the Phillips University football team. The Cunningham, Kansas native coached 46 years at the high school, college and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) levels and compiled an 850–437 record. He is mostly known for coaching the Wyoming Cowboys men's basketball team from 1939 to 1959. While at Wyoming, Shelton had a record of 328 wins and 201 losses for a .620 winning percentage. He guided the Cowboys to eight Mountain States / Skyline Conference championships and seven NCAA Tournament appearances. During his career, he was President of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980.

The Western Wrestling Conference (WWC) was an NCAA Division I wrestling-only conference that competed from 2006 through 2015. All of its past members became associate members of the Big 12 Conference, and all but one continue to compete in Big 12 wrestling. The exception is Fresno State, which was a charter WWC member but dropped the sport before conference competition started, revived the sport in 2017 as a Big 12 associate member, and dropped wrestling again after the 2020–21 season.

Dean Heil is a former folkstyle wrestler from Brunswick, Ohio. Heil wrestled collegiately at Oklahoma State, where he was a three-time All-American and two-time NCAA champion.
