The Ruhr, also referred to as the Ruhr area, sometimes Ruhr district, Ruhr region, or Ruhr valley, is a polycentric urban area in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. With a population density of 2,800/km2 and a population of over 5 million (2017), it is the largest urban area in Germany. It consists of several large cities bordered by the rivers Ruhr to the south, Rhine to the west, and Lippe to the north. In the southwest it borders the Bergisches Land. Bochum is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia. With a population of 364,920 (2016), it is the sixth largest city of the most populous German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the 16th largest city of Germany. On the Ruhr Heights (Ruhrhöhen) hill chain, between the rivers Ruhr to the south and Emscher to the north, it is the second largest city of Westphalia after Dortmund, and the fourth largest city of the Ruhr after Dortmund, Essen and Duisburg. From 2017 on the European badminton championship is held annually except for the year with European Games. Since 2008, it is being graded as a Grand Prix Gold tournament by the Badminton World Federation.

Sture Johnsson is a retired badminton player from Sweden who won numerous Swedish national and international men's singles titles. His game was characterized by impressive stamina and mobility, and a powerful overhead smash.

The Germany national badminton team represents Germany in international badminton team competitions. It is controlled by the German Badminton Association, the national organization for badminton in the nation. Germany have two bronze finishes at the Uber Cup, particularly in 2006 and 2008. The woman's team were also champions in the 2012 Women's Team Badminton Championships.
The 1967–68 DFB-Pokal was the 25th season of the annual German football cup competition. It began on 27 January 1968 and ended on 9 June 1968. 32 teams competed in the tournament of five rounds. In the final the 1. FC Köln defeated the VfL Bochum 4–1.

The 1969 Uber Cup was the fifth edition of the Uber Cup, the women's badminton team competition. The tournament took place in the 1968-1969 badminton season, 18 countries competed. Japan won its second title in the Uber Cup, after beating the Indonesia team in the Final Round in Tokyo, Japan.
Angela Bairstow (1942-2016) was an English international badminton player.
Isabel Lohau is a German badminton player, specializing in doubles play. She started playing badminton at her hometown Hersbruck in 2001, and in 2010 she joined the Germany national badminton team. She along with national team won the 2011 European Junior Championships and 2012 European Women's Team Championships. In the individual event, Lohau also won the bronze medals at the 2010 World Junior Championships in the mixed doubles, 2011 European Junior Championships in the mixed and girls' doubles, and at the 2018 and 2021 European Championships in the mixed doubles. She represented her country competing at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

The Norway national badminton team represents Norway in international badminton team competitions. It is controlled by the Norwegian Badminton Association. Norway participated in the Sudirman Cup until 2007. The national team have never qualified nor competed in the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup.
Im Winkel, together with Gußstahlstraße, has been the red-light district of Bochum, Germany, since the early part of the 20th century. The local names for the street are "Eierberg", "Gurke", "Riemenschleifer" (belt-grinder) or "Riemenwalzwerk".
