The 1972 National Indoor Championships – Doubles was an event of the 1972 National Indoor Championships tennis tournament held at the Hampton Roads Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia in the United States from February 28 through March 5, 1972. Ilie Năstase and Ion Țiriac were the defending champion. They retained their doubles title, defeating Andrés Gimeno and Manuel Orantes 7–5, 7–5 in the final. [1] [2] [3]

Ilie Theodoriu Năstase is a former World No. 1 Romanian tennis player. He was ranked world No. 1 in singles from 23 August 1973 to 2 June 1974, and was the first man to hold the top position on the computerized ATP rankings. Năstase is one of the 10 players in history who have won over 100 total ATP titles, with 64 in singles and 45 in doubles.

Stan Smith defeated Ilie Năstase in the final, 4–6, 6–3, 6–3, 4–6, 7–5 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1972 Wimbledon Championships. It was his only Wimbledon singles title, and his second and final major singles title. Due to rain washing out the final Saturday when the men's singles final between Smith and Nastase was due to take place, the final became the first match in Wimbledon history to take place on a Sunday. Not until 10 years later in 1982 did Wimbledon men's singles finals start being deliberately scheduled to take place on a Sunday.

Broderick Dyke and Peter Lundgren were the defending champions of the doubles event at the Australian Indoor Championships tennis tournament but lost in the quarterfinals to Luke Jensen and Laurie Warder.

The 1972 Commercial Union Assurance Grand Prix was a professional tennis circuit held that year and organized by the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF). It consisted of 33 Grand Prix tournaments in different categories including three of the four Grand Slam tournaments and was followed by a season-ending Masters tournament. The circuit ran from February through November.

Owen Davidson and Billie Jean King were the defending champions, but Davidson did not compete. King partnered with Clark Graebner but lost in the semifinals to Ilie Năstase and Rosie Casals.
