The Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, better known by its informal name "Jonestown", was a remote settlement in Guyana established by the Peoples Temple, an American religious movement under the leadership of Jim Jones. Jonestown became internationally infamous when, on November 18, 1978, a total of 918 people died at the settlement; at the nearby airstrip in Port Kaituma; and at a Temple-run building in Georgetown, Guyana's capital city. The name of the settlement became synonymous with the incidents at those locations.

The 1978 United States House of Representatives elections was an election for the United States House of Representatives on November 7, 1978, to elect members to serve in the 96th United States Congress. They occurred in the middle of Democratic President Jimmy Carter's term, amidst an energy crisis and rapid inflation. The Democratic Party lost a net of 15 seats to the Republican Party, and thus lost their two-thirds supermajority, but still maintained a large 277-seat majority.

Robert Francis Kennedy, also known as RFK, was an American politician and lawyer who served as United States attorney general (1961–1964) and later as a U.S. senator representing New York (1965–1968). A member of the Kennedy family and Democratic Party, he is considered an icon of modern American liberalism. He was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in the 1968 presidential election, but he was assassinated during the campaign.
