The Canberra Cannons are a defunct basketball team that competed in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL). They went into financial administration in 2003 and were relocated to Newcastle, where they became the Hunter Pirates. The Adelaide 36ers, also known as the Sixers, are an Australian professional men's basketball team in the National Basketball League (NBL). The 36ers are the only team in the league representing the state of South Australia and are based in the state's capital of Adelaide. The club was originally called the Adelaide City Eagles when they joined the NBL in 1982, but changed their name to the 36ers the following year. The 36ers nickname comes from the fact that the Colony of South Australia was officially proclaimed on 28 December 1836. Since 2019, the 36ers play their home games at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

Michael George McKay is an Australian former professional basketball player. He played most of his career with the Adelaide 36ers of the National Basketball League (NBL), winning the 1986 championship with the team. McKay also played in the NBL for the West Adelaide Bearcats, Brisbane Bullets, Canberra Cannons and the Wollongong Hawks. He was a frequent member of the Australia men's national basketball team during the late 1980s and early 1990s, including being part of the national team at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

Three of the Melbourne-based clubs rebranded themselves in the off season, with the Nundawading Spectres renaming themselves to Eastside Spectres, Coburg Giants became North Melbourne Giants and the St. Kilda Saints became Westside Saints.

The 1994 NBL season was the 16th season of competition since its establishment in 1979. A total of 14 teams contest the league.

The 1981 NBL Finals was the postseason tournament of the National Basketball League's 1981 season, which began in February. The finals began on 27 June. The tournament concluded with the Launceston Casino City defeating the Nunawading Spectres in the NBL Grand Final on 28 June.

Steve Breheny is an Australian basketball player and coach. He played eight years in the National Basketball League (NBL) for the Coburg Giants, the Geelong Cats and the St. Kilda Saints. At international level, he played for Australia at the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 1982 FIBA World Championship. After retiring, Breheny coached at NBL level for the Canberra Cannons and the Geelong Supercats. He also led Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) teams Coburg Cougars and Adelaide Lightning.
