The 1980 UCI Juniors Track World Championships were the sixth annual Junior World Championship for track cycling held in Mexico City, Mexico in August 1980. [1] It was the third successive championship to be held in the Americas.
The Championships had five events for men only, Sprint, Points race, Individual pursuit, Team pursuit and 1 kilometre time trial. Maic Malchow of East Germany and Dainis Leipinch of the Soviet Union were the most successful cyclists, winning the sprint double and pursuit double respectively.

The UCI Track Cycling World Championships are the set of world championship events for the various disciplines and distances in track cycling. They are regulated by the Union Cycliste Internationale. Before 1900, they were administered by the UCI's predecessor, the International Cycling Association (ICA).

Washington, D.C. was the host city for the 1978 Junior World Championships, but the track events were held at the Trexlertown Velodrome (PA). It was the first championship to be held outside Europe
Gordon Singleton, is a past world-record holding Canadian cyclist. In 1982, he became the first Canadian cyclist to win a world championship, and he was the first, and only, cyclist in history to simultaneously hold world records in all three of cycling's sprint races: the 200m, 500m and 1000m distances. An Olympic racer, he was deprived of competing in the 1980 Olympics at the peak of his career by Canada's boycott of those games in Moscow.
