Doug Mountjoy won the tournament, defeating Terry Griffiths 4–3 in the final. [3]

Anthony Christian Meo is a retired English snooker player. He won the 1989 British Open by defeating Dean Reynolds 13–6 in the final, and was runner-up to Steve Davis at the 1984 Classic. He won four World Doubles Championship titles, partnering Davis, and the 1983 World Team Classic representing England alongside Davis and Tony Knowles.
Terence Martin Griffiths is a Welsh retired professional snooker player and current snooker coach and pundit. In his second professional tournament, he became world champion when he won the 1979 World Snooker Championship. He was the second qualifier to win the title after Alex Higgins achieved the feat in 1972; only Shaun Murphy has done it since, winning the title in 2005. Griffiths defeated Dennis Taylor by 24 frames to 16 in the final. Nine years later, in 1988, Griffiths reached the final of the competition again. He was tied with Steve Davis at 8–8, but lost the match 11–18.
Marco Fu Ka-chun, MH, JP is a Hong Kong professional snooker player. He is a three-time ranking event winner, having won the 2007 Grand Prix, the 2013 Australian Goldfields Open and the 2016 Scottish Open. He has been a runner-up at two Triple Crown events, at the 2008 UK Championship and the 2011 Masters. In addition, Fu has reached the semi-finals of the World Championship twice—in 2006 and in 2016.
Doug Mountjoy was a Welsh snooker player from Tir-y-Berth, Gelligaer, Glamorgan, Wales. He was a member of the professional snooker circuit from the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, and remained within the top 16 of the world rankings for 11 consecutive years. He began his professional snooker career by taking the 1977 Masters, which he entered as a reserve player. He won both the 1978 UK Championship and the 1979 Irish Masters. Mountjoy reached the final of the 1981 World Snooker Championship where he was defeated by Steve Davis. He was also runner-up at the 1985 Masters losing to Cliff Thorburn, but by 1988 he had dropped out of the top 16.
The Australian Goldfields Open was a professional ranking snooker tournament. The final champion was John Higgins in 2015.
The Thailand Masters was a professional snooker tournament. Previously known as Asian Open and Thailand Open, it was a ranking tournament from 1989/90 to 2001/02. An event called the Thailand Masters also formed part of the World Series in 1991/92, with Steve Davis beating Stephen Hendry 6–3. The final champion was Marco Fu.
David Taylor is an English former professional snooker player. He won the World and English Amateur Championships in 1968, before the success of those wins encouraged him to turn professional. He was nicknamed "The Silver Fox" because of his prematurely grey hair.

He won the 1982 International Open and the 1983 Professional Players Tournament, and was a three times semi-finalist in the World Professional Snooker Championship in the 1980s. His highest world ranking was second, in the 1984/85 season.

The 2017 Hong Kong Masters was a non-ranking snooker tournament, held from 20 to 23 July 2017 at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The event is organized by the Hong Kong Billiard Sports Control Council known as HKBSCC, subvented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, managed by appointed event agency Yello Marketing (Yello) and sanctioned by World Snooker Limited. This tournament set the record for the largest live audience ever recorded at a snooker match with 3,000 people attending.

The 1986 Hong Kong Masters was a professional non-ranking snooker tournament that took place between 2 and 7 September 1986 at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Hong Kong. Willie Thorne won the tournament, defeating Dennis Taylor 8–3 in the final. Thorne recorded two century breaks, 102 and 106, during the final. The event was sponsored by Camus and had a prize fund of £86,000.
The 2022 Hong Kong Masters was an invitational professional snooker tournament that took place from 6 to 9 October 2022 at the Hong Kong Coliseum, Hung Hom in Hong Kong. Organised by the Hong Kong Billiard Sports Control Council and the World Snooker Tour as part of the 2022–23 snooker season, the tournament was staged for the first time since the 2017 edition. It was the first professional snooker tournament held outside Europe, as well as the first major sporting event held in Hong Kong, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Around 9,000 spectators attended the final of the tournament, setting a new record for the largest live audience at a snooker match. The winner received £100,000 from a total prize purse of £315,000.
