The 1984 World Sambo Championships were held in Madrid, Spain on June 1984. Championships were organized by FILA. According to certain sources, women also competed at the event. [1]

Sambo is a Soviet-origin Russian martial art, an internationally practiced combat sport, and a recognized style of amateur wrestling included by UWW in the World Wrestling Championships along with Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling.

Oleg Stepanov Russian judoka

Oleg Sergeevich Stepanov was a sambo and judo competitor. Domestically he was mostly known for sambo, which was a very popular sport in the Soviet Union, albeit with a limited international recognition. Between 1958 and 1968 Stepanov won eight national titles in sambo. Internationally he competed in judo, which has similar rules to sambo. The first Soviet judo team was formed in 1962 from the best sambo competitors, including Stepanov, and in 1963 it showed its strength in Europe and Japan. Later Stepanov won bronze medals at the 1964 Olympics and 1965 World Championships, as well as European titles in 1965 and 1966.

James "Chico" Hernandez is an accomplished athlete in the sport of Sambo. He is the first Sambo champion to be featured on a box of Wheaties Energy Crunch and the first Sambo wrestler to appear in CNN/SI "Faces In the Crowd".

Gokor Chivichyan is an Armenian judo, submission grappling, and mixed martial arts instructor. Chivichyan currently trains professional and amateur fighters at the Hayastan MMA Academy in North Hollywood, California, United States. With his extensive knowledge in judo, sambo, catch wrestling, freestyle wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Chivichyan is considered to be one of the most complete grapplers of all time.

The 1983 World Wrestling Championships were held in Kyiv, Soviet Union, in three amateur wrestling styles, recognized by FILA. Greco-Roman style wrestling competition was contested 22–25 September, freestyle wrestlers competed 26–29 September, Sambo wrestlers competed 30 September — 1 October.

Anzor Kiknadze Georgian judoka

Anzor Kiknadze was a Georgian judoka who won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division (+80 kg) at the 1964 Summer Olympics. At the world championships he won two bronze medals, in 1965 and 1967. At the European Championships he won an open title in 1962 and 1964–66, and finished second in 1967 and 1968. He was also European team champion in 1963–66, winning team bronzes in 1962 and 1967. Nationally, he was a Soviet champion in sambo in 1961–1965, but never competed in the judo championships, which were first held in 1973. After retiring from competitions he coached sambo and judo in Tbilisi where he died in a car accident, aged 43.

Nicholas "Nick" Tritton is a male judoka who grew up in the Perth/Lanark area of Ontario Canada. Nicholas was a member of Canada's National Team for more than ten years and won many medals domestically and internationally including 13 medals on the Grand Slam, Grand Prix and World Cup circuit including back to back bronze medals at the prestigious Tokyo Grand Slam as well as the bronze medal in the men's lightweight division at the 2007 Pan American Games, alongside Cuba's Ronald Girones and another bronze at the 2011 Pan American Games in Mexico. He represented Canada in the sport of Judo at the 2008 Summer & 2012 Summer Olympics and at five World Championships. He won 5 medals at the Pan American Judo Championships. He also earned a bronze medal at the 2005 Francophone Games and a silver at the 2009 Francophone Games.

Alexander Pushnitsa

Alexander Pushnitsa - the most titled sambist in history of Sambo, Merited Master of Sports of the USSR (1980), nine-time champion of the USSR, two-time European champion and three-time winner of the world championships. He was a permanent captain of the Soviet Union Sambo team for 15 years. In 1997 in Paris he won the European Championship for Sambo Veterans.
A graduate of the Omsk State Institute of Physical Culture (1987). Honorary Citizen of the city of Omsk. Deputy Chairman of Sambo Federation of the Omsk region, head of the sports school "Sambo-2000." Since 2000 annual open Russian Sambo tournament is held in Omsk for the prizes of Alexander Pushnitsa.

Christiaan "Chris" Dolman is a Dutch retired martial artist and professional wrestler. He won a silver medal at the European championship in judo and a gold at the world championship in Sambo, counting as the first non-Russian sambo world champion, and has over 40 national and 10 international championships. He is known for his career in Fighting Network Rings and for his role training several Dutch mixed martial artists and kickboxers, among them Bas Rutten, Alistair and Valentijn Overeem, Gilbert Yvel and Gegard Mousasi.

The World Sambo Championships are the main championships in Sambo and Combat Sambo, organized by the Fédération Internationale de Sambo (FIAS).

The European Sambo Championships is the main sambo championships in Europe, organized by European Sambo Federation. The first championship was held in 1972 in [Riga]].

The 1991 World Sambo Championships were held in two places because of international politics. In 1991 some countries left the long standing FIAS World Sambo Championships to create their own World Championship FMS / IFS. The 1991 Soviet Union sambo team would be the last Soviet athletic team to compete as one country before the Soviet break up. The 1991 Soviet team became the last to ever win the World Sambo Championships as a country. The FIAS World Sambo Championships were held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and the new FMS World Sambo Championships were held in Chambéry, France in December. Following the 1991 World Championships FIAS continued its control of International Sambo and remains the governing body for the World Sambo Championships.

Abubakar Nurmagomedov is a Russian mixed martial artist, who is currently competing in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is a three-time Combat Sambo World Championship bronze medalists and Russian national combat sambo champion.

Yaroslav Amosov is a Ukrainian mixed martial artist, currently competing in the welterweight division of Bellator MMA, where he is the current Bellator Welterweight Champion. As of June 28, 2022, he is #4 in the Bellator men's pound-for-pound rankings.

The Pan American Wrestling Championships is the continental wrestling championships for nations from North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Three wrestling styles, recognized internationally by FILA, have been contested annually since the inception, namely: Greco-Roman, freestyle and Sambo wrestling. Since 1997 women's freestyle is also contested along with the mentioned styles.

Tagir Radzhabovich Ulanbekov is a Russian mixed martial artist who competes in the Flyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is also the former Fight Nights Global Flyweight Champion. He is one-time World champion, one-time Eurasian champion and one-time European cup winner for his team SC Bazarganova. As of June 27, 2022, he is #14 in the UFC flyweight rankings.

Sambo Federation of Armenia

The Sambo Federation of Armenia, is the regulating body of sambo in Armenia, governed by the Armenian Olympic Committee. The headquarters of the federation is located in Yerevan.

Rebecca "Becky" Scott, née Trussell, is an American retired martial arts athlete who competed in sambo and judo. She is a US National Championships Bronze Medalist in judo. At the time, this was the highest level of competition as there was no world championship. She eventually became a team alternate for the first Judo World Championship for women. Scott competed at 149lbs. Scott competed at the Sambo at the 1983 Pan American Games Scott was a 5 time National Champion in sombo. She additionally won the 1984 AAU National Women's Sombo championships.
