Boris Becker defeated Kevin Curren in the final, 6–3, 6–7(4–7), 7–6(7–3), 6–4 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1985 Wimbledon Championships. He became the first unseeded player and the first German to win the Wimbledon singles title, as well as the youngest ever male major singles champion at 17 years, 7 months and 15 days of age. This latter record would eventually be broken by Michael Chang at the 1989 French Open.
Stefan Edberg defeated Boris Becker in the final, 4–6, 7–6(7–2), 6–4, 6–2 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1988 Wimbledon Championships. Most of the final was played on the third Monday. On Sunday, Becker and Edberg only managed 22 minutes of constantly interrupted play due to rain, with Edberg leading 3–2 in the first set before the rest of the final was played the next day.

He reached his best ranking on the tour as world No 12 in March 1986, a few months after consecutively claiming his two first titles on the tour in the autumn of 1985 – in Los Angeles (beating Stefan Edberg 7-6, 6-7, 7-6) and in Brisbane (beating Kelly Evernden 6-3, 6-3).
