The 1989–90 1. Slovenská národná hokejová liga season was the 21st season of the 1. Slovenská národná hokejová liga, the second level of ice hockey in Czechoslovakia alongside the 1. Česká národní hokejová liga. 12 teams participated in the league, and Slovan ChZJD Bratislava won the championship and were promoted to the Czechoslovak First Ice Hockey League. Plastika Nitra was also promoted.

Czechoslovakia, or Czecho-Slovakia, was a sovereign state in Central Europe that existed from October 1918, when it declared its independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, until its peaceful dissolution into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on 1 January 1993.

The Czechoslovak First Ice Hockey League was the elite ice hockey league in Czechoslovakia from 1930 until 1993, when the country split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Slovak Extraliga and Czech Extraliga formed from the split.

Valašský hokejový klub Vsetín, also known as Hockey Club Vsetín, is an ice hockey team in the Czech 1. liga. The team is the most successful team in Czech Republic ice hockey history, winning five straight Extraliga championships between 1995 and 1999, and another in 2001 for six titles in seven years. Jakub Stehlík is a Czech professional ice hockey defenceman. He currently plays with Piráti Chomutov in the 1. národní hokejová liga (Czech.1). After previously playing with Orli Znojmo in the Austrian Hockey League, Stehlík made his Czech Extraliga debut playing with Piráti Chomutov debut during the 2012–13 Czech Extraliga season.
