The 1994 Istanbul mayoral election took place on 27 March 1994 in order to elect the Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Additionally, each of the 27 districts of Istanbul elected a district municipal mayor on the same day. The election was held as part of nationwide local elections held on the same day.
The winner of the metropolitan mayoral race was Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the candidate of the Islamist-oriented Welfare Party, who served until his imprisonment in 1998. Erdoğan later went on to become Prime Minister of Turkey in 2003 and President of Turkey in 2014.

Kadir Topbaş was a Turkish architect, businessman and politician who served as Mayor of Istanbul from 2004 to 2017.
Binali Yıldırım is a Turkish politician who served as the 27th and last prime minister of Turkey from 2016 to 2018 and Speaker of the Grand National Assembly from 2018 to 2019. He was Leader of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) from 2016 to 2017, then becoming parliamentary leader until 2018.
Mustafa Demir is a Turkish architect, politician, and Mayor of the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality. Prior to his becoming mayor, he was the Samsun Deputy in the 22nd, 23rd and 24th legislative terms and served as the Minister of Public Works and Housing. He is the founder and former chairman of the ruling AK Party Samsun Province chapter.
Veysel Eroğlu is a Member of Parliament for Afyonkarahisar of the ruling Justice and Development Party and a former Minister of Forestry and Water of Turkey.
Numan Kurtulmuş is a Turkish politician and academic who is currently the speaker of the Grand National Assembly.

The Istanbul Canal is a project for an artificial sea-level waterway planned by Turkey in East Thrace, connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, and thus to the Aegean and Mediterranean seas. The Istanbul Canal would bisect the current European side of Istanbul and thus form an island between Asia and Europe. The new waterway would bypass the current Bosporus.
Süleyman Soylu is a Turkish politician. He is a deputy chairman of the Justice and Development Party. He previously served as the Minister of Labour and Social Security from November 2015 to August 2016 and the Minister of the Interior from August 2016 to June 2023. He is a former leader of the Democrat Party (DP).
Local elections were held in Turkey on 30 March 2014, with some repeated on 1 June 2014. Nihat Zeybekci is a Turkish economist, politician, a member of parliament for Denizli Province of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and former Minister of the Economy.
The Istanbul mayoral elections of 2014 were held on 30 March 2014, as part of the local elections taking place throughout Turkey on the same day. The Metropolitan Mayor of Istanbul as well as the district mayors of the 39 districts of Istanbul were elected, along with municipal councillors for each district municipality. The metropolitan municipality race was one of the most high-profile and close watched elections in the country, with the Justice and Development Party candidate Kadir Topbaş being re-elected for a third consecutive term as mayor with 47.9% of the vote. Mustafa Sarıgül, the Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate, came second with 40% of the vote.
İlhan Kesici is a Turkish politician from the Republican People's Party (CHP), who has served as the Member of Parliament for Istanbul's first electoral district since 2015. He previously served as a CHP MP for the same district from 2007 to 2011 and as an MP for Bursa from 1995 to 1999 while he was a member of the Motherland Party (ANAP). In August 2015, he was offered a ministerial position in the interim election government formed by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, which he turned down.

A total of 30 metropolitan and 1,351 district municipal mayors, alongside 1,251 provincial and 20,500 municipal councillors were elected, in addition to numerous local non-partisan positions such as neighbourhood representatives (muhtars) and elderly people's councils.
The March 2019 Istanbul mayoral election took place on 31 March 2019, as part of the 2019 Turkish local elections. In addition to a mayor for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, all 39 Istanbul districts elected their own individual mayors as well as district councillors.

Ekrem İmamoğlu is a Turkish businessman, real estate developer, and social democratic politician serving as the 32nd Mayor of Istanbul. He was first elected with 4.1 million votes and won with a margin of 13 thousand votes against his AKP opponent in the March 2019 mayoral election as the joint Nation Alliance candidate of the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the Good Party. He served only from 17 April 2019 until 6 May 2019, when the election was annulled. He was then reelected in a renewed election on 23 June 2019 by an even larger margin of 800,000 votes. He ran for the office again in the 2024 Istanbul Mayoral elections in which he won by approximately a 50 percent majority, securing another 5 year term. He had previously been the Mayor of Beylikdüzü, a western district of Istanbul, between 2014 and 2019.
The June 2019 Istanbul mayoral election was held on 23 June 2019. It was a repeat of the March 2019 mayoral election, which was annulled by the Supreme Electoral Council (YSK) on 6 May 2019. The original election had resulted in a narrow 0.2% margin of victory for opposition candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, causing the governing Justice and Development Party to successfully petition for a by-election.
