The Toppserien is the top level of women's association football in Norway. It was founded in 1984.

Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a Nordic country in Northwestern Europe whose territory comprises of the western and northernmost portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula; the remote island of Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard are also part of the Kingdom of Norway. The Antarctic Peter I Island and the sub-Antarctic Bouvet Island are dependent territories and thus not considered part of the kingdom. Randi Leinan is a former Norwegian football player and World Champion.

Marianne Iren Pettersen is a Norwegian footballer. She was a forward for the club Asker, whom she joined from Gjelleråsen after the 1996 season, and became the top scorer with 36 goals in the 1998 season of 18 matches. For the Norwegian national team, she debuted in 1994, scoring against Italy. Overall, she scored 66 goals in 98 international matches. She retired in 2003, after competing in the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics.

Gjelleråsen Idrettsforening is a Norwegian sports club from Gjelleråsen in Nittedal, founded 6 March 1935. It has sections for association football, floorball, swimming, gymnastics and skiing. Their club colours are green and white.

Haugar and Gjelleråsen were relegated to the 1. divisjon.

The 2009 Toppserien was the twenty-third season of top-tier women's football in Norway since its establishment in 1987. A total of twelve teams contested the league, consisting of ten who competed in the previous season and two promoted from the 1. divisjon. Running from 13 April to 31 October 2009, it was won by Røa for the third consecutive year. As winners, Røa qualified for the Round of 32 of the 2010–11 UEFA Women's Champions League as the sole representative from Norway. Because Norway had dropped to ninth place in the UEFA coefficient rankings for 2010–11, the runners-up in the Toppserien could no longer enter the Qualifying Round of the Champions League, as had been the case in the previous season.

The 1984 1. divisjon (women), was the first season of a top-tier women's football league in Norway, and was won by Sprint-Jeløy. The league was contested by 30 teams, divided in three groups of 10 teams.

The 1986 1. divisjon (women) was the third season of a top-tier women's football league in Norway, and was won by Sprint-Jeløy. The league was contested by 40 teams, divided in four groups of ten teams. It was the first year that teams from Nord Norge contested in the top league.

The 1995 season was the 90th season of competitive football in Norway.
