The 1996–97 La Liga season was the 66th since its establishment. It began on 31 August 1996, and concluded on 23 June 1997. Five clubs were relegated to the Segunda División at the end of the season, as the number of La Liga clubs was reduced to 20 starting from the following season. This was thus the last La Liga season played with 22 teams.

The 1995–96 La Liga season was the 65th since its establishment. It began on 2 September 1995, and concluded on 26 May 1996.

During the 1996-97 season FC Barcelona played in La Liga, Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

FC Barcelona had one of its most successful seasons in the club's history, retaining the domestic league supremacy and reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League; however they collapsed 0–4 against A.C. Milan. Their progress to the final in Athens had been virtually flawless. Indeed, on their way the Catalans had won four group games and drawn two to reach the semifinals, where they defeated FC Porto in a single-game tie at Camp Nou.

The 1996–97 season was the Real Madrid CF's 66th season in La Liga. This article shows player statistics and official matches that the club played during the 1996–97 season. For the first time since 1977–78, Real Madrid was not involved in any European competitions due to the previous season's lowest league finish in 19 years.

The 1990–91 Copa del Rey was the 89th staging of the Spanish Cup. The competition began on 5 September 1990 and ended on 29 June 1991 with the final.

The 1995–1996 campaign was the 90th season in Atlético Madrid's history and their 60th season in La Liga, the top division of Spanish football. The team won 'The Double' both La Liga and Copa del Rey in a great season for supporters.

The 1996–1997 campaign was the 91st season in Atlético Madrid's history and their 62nd season in La Liga, the top division of Spanish football.

In the 1996–97 season, CD Tenerife failed to improve on the previous season's fifth-place finish, although they made up for the league disappointment by reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals. Tenerife scored 69 goals in the league and could have possibly finished higher were it not for their leaky defence, which conceded more goals than all but five of the La Liga teams not relegated during the season.

The 1992–93 season was the 62nd season for Real Madrid C.F. in La Liga.

The 1992–93 season was the 94th season for FC Barcelona. In La Liga, there was an eerie sense of deja vu in the season as it came down to the final match day with Barcelona trailing Real Madrid by a solitary point. It seemed as though Real Madrid were poised to lift the title, playing their final game, ironically against Tenerife, who denied them the title on the final day of the previous season. Much to the shock of everyone, Tenerife beat Los Blancos 2–0, and with FC Barcelona beating Real Zaragoza 1–0, they won the third consecutive championship in a similar fashion to the previous season.

During the 1995–96 Spanish football season, Valencia CF competed in La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

The 1993–94 season was the 63rd season for Real Madrid CF in La Liga.

In the 1993–94 football season, Valencia CF failed to qualify for European competition as it ended 7th in La Liga and wasn't able to reach the quarterfinals in neither the Copa del Rey nor the UEFA Cup. The campaign was marked by the latter's 7–0 exit in Karlsruhe, the worst loss suffered by a Spanish team in European competition, and included the resignation of chairman Arturo Tuzón and the sacking of manager Guus Hiddink. However, Hiddink was eventually reinstated before the season was over after his own successor, Héctor Núñez, was also fired.

Deportivo La Coruña's 1996–97 season included its 32nd appearance in La Liga, where it ranked third place. Welsh manager John Toshack was replaced after 23 rounds by Brazilian head coach Carlos Alberto Silva.
