The 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship, known as the 1997 FIFA/Coca-Cola World Youth Championship for sponsorship purposes, was the 11th staging of the FIFA World Youth Championship. It was held from 16 June to 5 July 1997 in Malaysia. It was the first FIFA tournament hosted by a Southeast Asian country.

2000 AFC Asian Cup qualification is the qualification process organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to determine the participating teams for the 2000 AFC Asian Cup.

The 1996 AFC Asian Cup qualification involved 33 participating teams. The United Arab Emirates (hosts) and Japan (holders) qualified automatically for the 1996 AFC Asian Cup.

The group leaders and runners-up teams in the groups after six matches qualified to the quarterfinals.

The AFC First Round of 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification was contested between 36 AFC members.

The knockout stage of the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup began on 19 December with the semi-final round, and concluded on 21 December 1997 with the final at the King Fahd II Stadium, Riyadh. The top two teams from each group advanced to the knockout stage to compete in a single-elimination style tournament. A third place match was included and played between the two losing teams of the semi-finals.
