It was held simultaneously with the men's tournament, just like the year before in Brisbane, Australia. From this year on the tournament began to be held annually until the 2014 edition due to the introduction of the World League.

Ireland were also bronze medallists at the 2015 Men's EuroHockey Nations Championship.

The 1997 Men's Intercontinental Cup was a qualifier for the 1998 Men's Hockey World Cup. It was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from Tuesday March 4 to Saturday March 15, 1997. Twelve nations took part, and they were divided into two groups of six in the preliminary round. The top six teams joined the other six that have already qualified: Australia, England, Germany, India, Netherlands, and Pakistan.

The game has been played by women on the university and school level. Interstate matches were being played by 1909. The level of play on the interstate level is very high. The Australia women's national field hockey team, established in 1914, has placed highly in many competitions.

The 1973 Men's Hockey World Cup was the second installment of the Hockey World Cup. It was held from 24 August to 2 September at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. The tournament was won by host nation the Netherlands, who defeated India 4–2 on penalty strokes after the final had finished 2–2. It was the first World Cup to introduce the 12 teams format which became the standard format of the FIH Hockey World Cup until the 1998 edition.
