Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors race each other in travelling a certain distance on skates. Types of speed skating are long track speed skating, short track speed skating, and marathon speed skating. The Olympic Oval in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is North America's first covered speed skating oval; it was built for the 1988 Winter Olympics and opened 34 years ago on September 27, 1987. Located on the University of Calgary campus, it is the official designated training centre for Speed Skating Canada and the Elite Athlete Pathway.

International Skating Union

The International Skating Union (ISU) is the international governing body for competitive ice skating disciplines, including figure skating, synchronized skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating. It was founded in Scheveningen, Netherlands, in July 1892, making it one of the oldest international sport federations. The ISU was formed to establish standardized international rules and regulations for the skating disciplines it governs, and to organize international competitions in these disciplines. It is now based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Speed Skating Canada

Speed Skating Canada is the governing body for competitive long track and short track speed skating in Canada. It was founded in 1887, five years before the International Skating Union of which SSC later became a member in 1894.

Amy Peterson is an American short track speed skater. Peterson competed in five consecutive Olympic games from when short track speed skating was exhibition sport in 1988 to 2002.

Maurizio Carnino is an Italian short track speed skater and long track speed skater. He is a four-time Olympian, competing in the 1994 Lillehammer, 1998 Nagano, 2002 Salt Lake City, and 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.

The Short Track Speed Skating World Cup is a series of international short track speed skating competitions, organised yearly by the International Skating Union since the winter of 1998/1999. Every year during the winter, a number of competitions on a number of different distances are held. Skaters can earn points at each competition and the skater who has the most points on a given distance at the end of the series is the winner.

Lee Seung-hoon South Korean speed skater

Lee Seung-hoon is a South Korean speed skater. He won a gold medal in the 10,000 metres, a silver medal in the 5000 meters at the 2010 Winter Olympics, becoming the first Asian man to ever achieve these feats, and a gold medal in the mass start at the 2016 World Championships in Kolomna. He was a short track speed skater, winning the 2008 World Championship 3000 m super-final and three gold medals at the 2009 Winter Universiade. Lee converted to long track in September 2009, as he failed to earn his spot on the South Korea national short track team in the national trials.

Netherlands at the 2014 Winter Olympics Sporting event delegation

The Netherlands competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia from 7 to 23 February 2014. The Dutch team was the largest Dutch delegation at a Winter Olympics, with 41 competitors that participated in bobsleigh, short track speed skating, snowboarding, and speed skating.

Choi Min-jeong is a South Korean short track speed skater. Choi was awarded her first senior individual gold medal ahead of Arianna Fontana and Shim Suk-hee, passing through the finish line of the women's 1500 m final for second ISU Short Track World Cup of the 2014–2015 seasons held in Montreal, Canada. At age 16, she became the 2015 Overall Ladies World Champion. She is the current 500m short track speed skating Olympic record holder after breaking the previous record set by Elise Christie by 0.45 seconds. She was penalised in the final of the 500 m event at the 2018 Winter Olympics for interference, but won a gold medal in the following 1500 m race. She also won Gold in the 3000m Relay. In the 1000m Finals, she collided with another South Korean skater and crashed, ultimately finishing 4th.

The 2017 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships took place from 10 to 12 March 2017 in Rotterdam, Netherlands and were the 42nd World Short Track Speed Skating Championships.
