It was the second edition of the tournament and was held from 10 February until 16 February 2002. First-seeded Venus Williams won her second consecutive singles title at the event and earned $93,000 first-prize money.

Justine Henin is a Belgian former professional tennis player. She spent a total of 117 weeks as the world No. 1 and was the year-end No. 1 in 2003, 2006 and 2007. Henin, coming from a country with limited success in tennis, helped establish Belgium as a leading force in women's tennis with Kim Clijsters, and led the country to its first Fed Cup crown in 2001. She was known for her all-court style of play and for being one of the few female players to use a single-handed backhand.
Kim Antonie Lode Clijsters is a Belgian professional tennis player. Clijsters has been a world No. 1 in both singles and doubles, having held both rankings simultaneously in 2003. She has won a total of six Grand Slam tournament titles, four in singles and two in doubles.

She was replaced by 2008 French Open Champion Ana Ivanovic. In the first semifinal, Clijsters defeated Ivanovic in a tiebreaker (7–2), despite Ivanovic having match point at 5–4 up. Williams defeated Kuznetsova in the second semifinal, 6–4. Williams defeated Clijsters in the championship match by a score of 6–4 3–6 7–5.
Serena Williams defeated world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka 6–2, 2–6, 7–5 in the final, to win the Women's Singles tennis title at the 2012 US Open, despite Azarenka serving for the match and leading 5–3 in the third set. It was the first time since 1995 that the final went to three sets. With the victory, Williams became only the third woman in history to win Wimbledon, Olympics, and the US Open in the same season after Steffi Graf and her sister, Venus Williams. Williams dropped just one set the entire tournament, to Azarenka in the final.
