October 10 – Facing an investigation surrounding allegations of illegal drug use, American right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh publicly admits that he is addicted to prescription pain killers, and will seek treatment.

Debuts

March 3 – Skratch 'N Sniff debuts on San Diego area alternative rock station XETRA-FM (91.1 FM, "91X").
March 31 – "NBC News Radio," an hourly service of one-minute news updates anchored by NBC News and MSNBC personnel (but written by Westwood One staffers) is launched. Westwood One still maintains production of the unrelated five-minute long "NBC Radio News"-branded newscasts in morning drive (which had been produced and anchored by CBS Radio personnel since 1998) for one more year; they were one of a few remaining connections to the original NBC Radio Network.
April – KJOC in Davenport, Iowa dumps its all-sports format and switches to talk, hoping to compete with the market's WOC. Some sports programming – mainly, the Chicago Cubs and Iowa State University athletics – are held over, and (except for a few brief interim periods with ISU sports) remain to this day.
June 20 - KOCZ-LP in Opelousas, Louisiana, begins broadcasting as the third community radio "barnraising" initiative of the Prometheus Radio Project.
October 12 – Billboard unveils the Hot Dance Airplay chart. "Just The Way You Are" by Milky is the first number one single on the published chart. Original panel: WKTU/New York City, KDLD/Los Angeles, KKDL/Dallas-Fort Worth, WQSX/Boston, WPYM/Miami, KCJZ/San Antonio, KPTI/San Francisco and KNRJ/Phoenix. All stations have since left the Dance format and panel.

Westwood One was an American radio network that was based in New York City. At one time, it was managed by CBS Radio, and was later purchased by the private equity firm, The Gores Group. Due to purchases, mergers and other forms of consolidation in the 1980s and 1990s, at one time or another, it had ownership stakes in or syndication rights to some of the most famous brands in network radio, including CBS, NBC, Mutual, CNN, Fox, and Unistar. The company was one of the largest producers and distributors of radio programming in the United States. It broadcast entertainment, news, weather, sports, talk, and traffic programming to about 7,700 radio stations across the United States. KGO is a commercial radio station licensed to San Francisco, California. It is one of two talk radio stations in the San Francisco Bay Area owned by Cumulus Media. The other is 560 KSFO. KGO operates with 50,000 watts, the highest power permitted AM radio stations by the Federal Communications Commission. But it uses a directional antenna to protect the other Class A station on 810 kHz, WGY in Schenectady, New York. Most nights, using a good radio, KGO can be heard throughout the Western United States east to the Rocky Mountains, and in Northern Mexico, Western Canada and Alaska.

Cumulus Media Networks was an American radio network owned and operated by Cumulus Media. From 2011 until its merger with Westwood One, it controlled many of the radio assets formerly belonging to the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), which was broken up in 2007; Cumulus owned the portion of the network that was purchased by Citadel Broadcasting that year.

WXYT is a commercial radio station licensed to Detroit, Michigan, broadcasting a sports talk format. Its transmitter is in Monroe County at Ash Township and operations and studios are at Entercom's facilities in Southfield, Michigan. WXYT is a 50,000–watt, Class B station broadcasting on a regional frequency. It is not a clear-channel station because of its frequency and highly directional antenna.

The National Broadcasting Company's NBC Radio Network was an American commercial radio network which was in operation from 1926 through 2004. Along with the NBC Blue Network it was one of the first two nationwide networks established in the United States. Its major competitors were the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), founded in 1927, and the Mutual Broadcasting System, founded in 1934.

WPOP is a commercial radio station in Hartford, Connecticut, broadcasting a talk and sports radio format. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. The studios and offices are located on Columbus Boulevard in Hartford.

KSTE is a commercial radio station broadcasting a talk radio format. Licensed to Rancho Cordova, California, the station serves the Sacramento metropolitan area. The station is owned by iHeartMedia and features shows from Westwood One and Premiere Networks, a subsidiary of iHeartMedia. The studios and offices are in North Sacramento near the Arden Fair Mall.

WZAN is a commercial AM radio station broadcasting a classic country radio format. Licensed to Portland, it is owned by Saga Communications. The studios and offices are on Western Avenue in South Portland, Maine.
