Francesca Schiavone won her first and only Grand Slam singles title, defeating first-time Grand Slam finalist Samantha Stosur, 6–4, 7–6(7–2), to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2010 French Open, in a repeat of their last year's first round match. Schiavone thus became the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam tournament, and the first woman in the Open Era to win the French Open while seeded outside the top 10. The final was the first since the 2004 tournament where both players were appearing in their first Grand Slam singles final. Schiavone remains the last woman with a one-handed backhand to win a grand slam tournament on the woman's tour.
