The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup and for sponsorship purposes as Emirates FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association. A concurrent Women's FA Cup has been held since 1970.

Team Bath Football Club was an English association football club affiliated with the University of Bath in the city of Bath, Somerset. The club, formed in 1999, allowed players to combine professional football with higher education. In nine seasons, Team Bath rose rapidly through the English football league system to reach the Conference South in 2008. Still, the club disbanded at the end of the 2008–09 season following a decision by the Football Conference and The Football League to disqualify it from further promotion because of its financial structure.
Stocksbridge Park Steels Football Club is an English association football club based in Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire. They currently compete in the Northern Premier League Division One East. The club was formed in 1986 after a merger between two clubs, and uses a yellow and blue home kit. They play at the Bracken Moor ground.

The Brian Clough Trophy is contested whenever East Midlands rivals Derby County and Nottingham Forest play each other. The trophy is named after Brian Clough, who managed both clubs to great success. The trophy is currently held by Nottingham Forest.

A record 762 clubs were accepted for the competition; one club, South Normanton Athletic, folded before the fixtures were released, leaving 761 clubs to appear in the draw. Two more clubs, Brierley Hill & Withymoor and Stapenhill, folded after the draws for the early rounds were made, giving their opponents a walkover.

Manchester United successfully defended their League Cup title after defeating Aston Villa by 2–1 in the final at Wembley Stadium on 28 February 2010.

A total of 276 clubs entered the competition, which was won by Cambridge United, who beat Gosport Borough 4–0 in front of 18,120 spectators at Wembley.
