The 2008–09 Santiago Island League (South) season began on 8 November and finished on 3 May. Académica won their second title since the break-up and qualified into the 2009 Cape Verdean Football Championships, their title was the next in five years and their next national appearance in two years, also it was their sixth regional title and also qualified into the regional championships which was their recent competition, the club later won the island title. Also qualified was Sporting who won the national title last season, in the regionals, they were runner-up. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Santiago Sul, ARFSS). [1] [2] All matches were played at Estádio da Várzea.

The Santiago South Premier Division is a regional championship played in Santiago Island, Cape Verde and is a part of the Santiago South Zone Football Association. The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season while the last two placed clubs relegates in the following season. In 2007 and 2013 when Sporting Praia automatically qualified in the championships as they won their national titles in the previous season, a second place club qualified to the national championships. The division features 12 clubs in the premier division for the second time, Varanda and Delta were relegated into the Second Division, Tchadense and Benfica were promoted last season.

The 2009 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 30th of the competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. Its started on 16 April, earlier than the last season and finished on 11 June. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. Sporting would win their 8th title and fourth straight after defeating the city's rival Académica. This was the first final competition that featured two clubs from the same island as well as the same city, it happened the following season with Boavista. Sporting Praia's next and final title would win in 2012.

Santiago South Regional Football Association is a football (soccer) association covering the south of the island of Santiago, it is an affiliate of the Cape Verdean Football Federation. It is headquartered in the city of Praia. The association covers the municipalities of Praia, Ribeira Grande de Santiago and São Domingos.

Again, Sporting Praia was the defending team of the title. A total of 18 clubs participated in the competition, 10 in both divisions. [2]

Overview

A total of 231 goals were scored, fewer than last season. Sporting scored the most with 40, second was Boavista with 39 and third was second placed Sporting with 31. The least was Celtic with only 9, second were both Desportivo and Travadores with 10. [2] On the opposites, Vila Nova conceded the most with 33, second least were Celtic and Ribeira Grande with 30. Sporting conceded the least with 14.

In the Second Division competition, AJ Black Panthers won the title and would be promoted next season. 9th placed Celtic was relegated after winning the decisional match competitions. Ribeira Grande was also relegated, alongside Celtic competed in the Second Division next season. Both Ribeira Grande and Celtic did return to this division until next season.

Desportivo da Praia is a football club that currently plays in the Premier division and the Santiago Island League (South) in Cape Verde. It is based in the capital city of Praia in the island of Santiago. It is the military team of Cape Verde. Its nickname is militares. The team won the first and only regional opening tournament in 2014.

The 2010 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 31st of the competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. Its started on 8 May, slightly later than the last season and finished on 10 July, later than last year. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. It was the second consecutive time that the final featured two clubs from the same island and city, the next time it happened would be five years later. It brought the Capital Rivalry between Sporting and Boavista to the national championships. Another club of Praia named Boavista FC winning the national title breaking Sporting Praia's consecutive title wins. A month later, Boavista Praia would become the only club to win both the championship and the cup title in the same season.

2007–08 Santiago Island League (South)

The 2007–08 Santiago Island League (South) season began on 17 November and finished on 4 May. Sporting, the possessor of the most regional titles overall on the island once more won the regional competition and qualified into the 2008 Cape Verdean Football Championships. With Sporting who won the national title last season, second placed AD Bairro also qualified and made their only national appearance. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All matches were played at Estádio da Várzea.

2010–11 Santiago Island League (South)

The 2010–11 Santiago Island League (South) season began on 8 November and finished on 3 May. Boavista won their first title since the break-up and qualified into the 2011 Cape Verdean Football Championships. Boavista won the national title for 2010 which the runner up Sporting also qualified for the season. The next time a second participant from Santiago South would be in 2013. Also Boavista was to qualify into the super cup as champion and also as cup winner, but that competition did not took place. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All matches were played at Estádio da Várzea.

The 2017–18 Santiago South Premier Division season was the 16th second tier football competition in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde, from 3 November 2017 to 1 April 2018, a month earlier than last season. The tournament was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All matches were played at Estádio da Várzea. Académica Praia won their next title in nine years and participated in the 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championships and played in Group A. Académica finished with a new regional record of 56 points, beating Sporting Praia's 55 of the previous season, overall of any regional championship competitions, it is third behind of the clubs of the island's North Zone, GD Varandinha with 63 and Scorpion Vermelho with 61. Sporting Praia, the previous national champion also qualified, the club finished fourth for the season. Académica Praia will qualify in the upcoming 2018 Santiago South Super Cup.
