The 2005 Santiago South Premier Division season began on 8 January and finished on 24 April. Sporting won the regional competition and qualified into the 2005 Cape Verdean Football Championships. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Santiago Sul, ARFSS). [1] [2] All matches were played at Campo de Sucupira which was temporarily used up until 2007. The field no longer exists today and several buildings dominate the former field.

The Santiago South Premier Division is a regional championship played in Santiago Island, Cape Verde and is a part of the Santiago South Zone Football Association. The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season while the last two placed clubs relegates in the following season. In 2007 and 2013 when Sporting Praia automatically qualified in the championships as they won their national titles in the previous season, a second place club qualified to the national championships. The division features 12 clubs in the premier division for the second time, Varanda and Delta were relegated into the Second Division, Tchadense and Benfica were promoted last season.

The 2005 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 26th of the competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. Its started on 14 May and finished on 16 July, earlier than the last season. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. FC Derby won the 3rd title and did not receive entry to the 2006 CAF Champions League. No second place club would also receive entry to the 2006 CAF Confederation Cup

Santiago South Regional Football Association is a football (soccer) association covering the south of the island of Santiago, it is an affiliate of the Cape Verdean Football Federation. It is headquartered in the city of Praia. The association covers the municipalities of Praia, Ribeira Grande de Santiago and São Domingos.

Académica Praia was the defending team of the title. A total of 18 clubs participated in the competition, 10 in the Premier Division and eight in the Second, including in the lower division, Tchadense, Varanda and Asa Grande competed once more. [2] Also it would be the last competition competing in just a single municipality, the western part of Praia would hav the municipality of Ribeira Grande de Santiago created after the end of the season, a club from that area would compete in the Second Division next season.

Overview

A total of 244 goals were scored, fewer than last season. Sporting scored the most with 64 and dominated over 26% or a quarter of the total. Its club total remains unbeaten even after the expansion into 12 teams and 22 rounds which began in the 2014-15 season. Second was Vitória which had half of the Sporting's totals numbering 32 and third was Académica with 26. The least was Paiol with seven goals who competed in the last season ever before joining Unidos do Norte, second least was eighth placed Desportivo with 10 and third least was Delta with 15. [2]

Sporting finished with 49 points and was a regional record that stood for 12 years. In the 2016-17 season, after the expansion to 12 matches that started in 2014, Sporting took the record with 55 points and stood it for just a season. Also Sporting had a record 16 wins, the same thing, it was surpassed to 17 by the same club in the 2016-17 season.

The 2016–17 Santiago South Premier Division season was the 15th second tier football competition in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde, from 4 November 2016 to 30 April 2017. The tournament was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All the matches were played at Estádio da Várzea. Sporting Praia won their next title in three years which was their 10th title and participated in the 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championships and played in Group C that includes Sporting Brava, Sporting Praia had 55 points and made it a club record, overall of any regional tier 2 championship competitions, it was third behind of the clubs of the island's North Zone, GD Varandinha with 63 and Scorpion Vermelho with 61. Also Sporting Praia qualified in the 2017 Santiago South Super Cup and faced Os Garridos, runner up in the regional cup competitions as Sporting was also cup winner, Sporting would win that title.

Again since 1998, the Second Division competition took place with Lapaloma winning the title would be promoted. Second placed Delta remained in the division after winning the decisional match competitions. Paiol was relegated and was to compete in the Second Division next season, a few months after their relegation, the club became part of Unidos do Norte and that club continued competed in the Second Division next season.

Estádio da Várzea stadium

Estádio da Várzea is a multi-purpose stadium in Praia, Cape Verde just west of the city center's plateau in the subdivision of Várzea and on Avenida Cidade de Lisboa on its east side. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 8,000 people. The stadium is owned by the city of Praia and is operated by the Santiago South Regional Football Association and serves its headquarters of the association. The other stadium operated by the association in the south of the island is Calabaceira. The entrance is on the west side of the stadium where most of the seat is. The stadium has seat rows in the left and right sides, 200 meters east is the Plateau of Praia. Its size is 108 by 69 m, the longest part of the field goes north to south with a 15 degree angle facing east at the top. Its elevation is about 4 meters above sea level. A smaller practice field lies due south. The stadium is home to the four best football clubs in Cape Verde, Sporting, CD Travadores, Académica and Boavista FC the Santiago Island first division alongside Vitória FC, one of the region's best, it also home of Desportivo da Praia which is a military club and the lesser club Benfica Praia. Other teams that base in another part include ADESBA located in the nearby neighborhood of Craveiro Lopes some hundreds of meters north but play in the stadium.

2007–08 Santiago Island League (South)

The 2007–08 Santiago Island League (South) season began on 17 November and finished on 4 May. Sporting, the possessor of the most regional titles overall on the island once more won the regional competition and qualified into the 2008 Cape Verdean Football Championships. With Sporting who won the national title last season, second placed AD Bairro also qualified and made their only national appearance. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All matches were played at Estádio da Várzea.

2008–09 Santiago Island League (South)

The 2008–09 Santiago Island League (South) season began on 8 November and finished on 3 May. Académica won their second title since the break-up and qualified into the 2009 Cape Verdean Football Championships, their title was the next in five years and their next national appearance in two years, also it was their sixth regional title and also qualified into the regional championships which was their recent competition, the club later won the island title. Also qualified was Sporting who won the national title last season, in the regionals, they were runner-up. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All matches were played at Estádio da Várzea.

2010–11 Santiago Island League (South)

The 2010–11 Santiago Island League (South) season began on 8 November and finished on 3 May. Boavista won their first title since the break-up and qualified into the 2011 Cape Verdean Football Championships. Boavista won the national title for 2010 which the runner up Sporting also qualified for the season. The next time a second participant from Santiago South would be in 2013. Also Boavista was to qualify into the super cup as champion and also as cup winner, but that competition did not took place. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All matches were played at Estádio da Várzea.

The 2017–18 Santiago South Premier Division season was the 16th second tier football competition in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde, from 3 November 2017 to 1 April 2018, a month earlier than last season. The tournament was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All matches were played at Estádio da Várzea. Académica Praia won their next title in nine years and participated in the 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championships and played in Group A. Académica finished with a new regional record of 56 points, beating Sporting Praia's 55 of the previous season, overall of any regional championship competitions, it is third behind of the clubs of the island's North Zone, GD Varandinha with 63 and Scorpion Vermelho with 61. Sporting Praia, the previous national champion also qualified, the club finished fourth for the season. Académica Praia will qualify in the upcoming 2018 Santiago South Super Cup.
