Unidos do Norte Futebol Clube (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK as well as Badiu: Unidus du Norti) is a sports club that plays in the Santiago South Second Division in Cape Verde. It is based in the neighborhood of Achada de São Filipe in the Praia. In football, the club currently plays in the regional Second Division for the 2017-18 season. Unidos do Norte also has its basketball team, member of the Santiago South Regional Basketball Association.

The Alfabeto Unificado para a Escrita do Caboverdiano, commonly known as ALUPEC, is the alphabet that was officially recognized by the Cape Verdean government to write Cape Verdean Creole.

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).

The club was founded after a merger of Paiol and another club, in 2005, Praia Rural became part of Unidos do Norte.

History

Before the merger

Before the merger, there were clubs known as Paiol and another club. Paiol along with Praia Rural first competed in 1996 in the Second Division, in 1998, Paiol won the Second Division title and played in the Premier Division for a couple of seasons even that the 1999-2000 and the 2001-02 seasons were not held. They finished in the last two positions and Paiol was relegated in 2004. Praia Rural, a separate team played in the Second Division in 2005.

After the merger

In late 2004, Paiol and a club merged and became Unidos do Norte, a year later, Praia Rural became part of the club. Unidos do Norte mostly played in the Second Division but played one season in the Premier Division.

In the 2016-17 season, Unidos do Norte finished 6th with 23 points, earlier that season, they were in the top two positions but was immediately fallen during mid-season, the club finished fifth with 23 points, six wins that were also shared with Delta and Relâmpago, the club scored 28 goals, that would serve as a small pretext on finishing second next season. In the 2017-18 season, the club started well and for the past couple of rounds in the top two positions and alongside Relâmpago, they are as of the 9th round with the club being second, they have a slim chance for qualification into the Premier Division in the following season. The club also has a total of 20 goals, the most in the region. They recently suffered two more losses to Os Garridos and the historically top five club Vitória who is no longer powerful today. Their positions was on and off in the 2nd-3rd positions. At round 14, they were third. After 14 matches played, they became 2nd, a level for qualification. Unidos do Norte made a goal draw with Vila Nova on March 11, Garridos' lost to first placed Relâmpago had Unidos a 50/50 chance of promotion. The last match was a 2-3 win over Calabaceira and finished with 30 points, a point more than Os Garridos, thus Unidos do Norte finished second, after playing for several seasons in the Second Division, they finally got promotion into the Premier Division next season.

In the regional cup competitions, Unidos do Norte played one match in the First Round, they lost 0-3 to Sporting Praia in 2016. Unidos do Norte started the 2017-18 regional cup in the round of 8 played on January 10, 2018 with Kumunidade.

Sporting Clube da Praia

Sporting Clube da Praia, short form: Sporting Praia is a professional football club that plays in the Santiago South Premier Division in Cape Verde. It is based in the capital city of Praia in the island of Santiago, one of the unrelegated clubs in the south of the island along with three of the city's four historically mightiest clubs including Académica, Boavista and CD Travadores. Along with Académcia, Boavista, Desportivo, Travadores and Vitória, it is one of several teams that share the same ground, Estádio da Várzea, which has a capacity of 8,000. Sporting has won six championships since independence and a few before independence. The first title was won in the summer of 1962 before independence. Sporting recently won the 2017 national title. Its current president is Carlos Daniel Caetano and its manager is Lito, who once played for Portuguese clubs as footballer.

Stadium

Unidos do Norte has its home field in Achada Grande Tras, also its other home field is in Ponta d'Água (rarely as Ponta de Água), a perfect size field in the north of the city located northwest of the middle of the subdivision, their second field is a newly opened one in Ponta d'Água. They are used for practices. Unidos do Norte plays most of its matches at Estádio da Várzea, a multi-use stadium in Praia, Cape Verde. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 8,000. The stadium has seat rows in the left and right sides and a small hill and a plateau lies to the west.

It is played along with Praia's five famous teams including Sporting, Boavista, Vitória Praia, Académica and CD Travadores in the same stadium. The club also practices at the stadium and probably practices at Sucupira and Calabaceira, the main field of Celtic and Varanda.

Varanda also plays some matches at Estádio de Calabaceira, located north of the center in the mid north just north of the bank of Ribeira da Trindade. The stadium holds 1,000 Other clubs, Second Division participants plays some matches at the stadium.

Unidos do Norte once trained in Achada Grande Tras located east of the city center.

Its logo colors are yellow and blue. Its uniform colors first started as yellow and blue.

Unidos do Norte also has its own basketball team, they currently play in the Santiago South Basketball Championships. The team is a member of the Santiago South Regional Basketball Association. [3]

Arena

The team plays at Gimnodesportivo Vava Duarte in Gamboa, Praia just south of Estádio da Várzea and the city center. Other notable clubs playing at the stadium include ABC and Seven Stars.
