The Santiago Island or Regional Second Division is a tier-3 regional championship played in Santiago Island, Cape Verde. The tournament is organized by the Santiago South Zone Football Association. [1] The winner of the championship plays in Santiago South Premier Division in the following season. The runner up plays with a club in the last two positions of the Premier Division to decide on promoting or remain in the Second Division. In 2016, two clubs were promoted, Benfica (winner) and Tchadense (runner-up).

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).

Santiago South Regional Football Association is a football (soccer) association covering the south of the island of Santiago, it is an affiliate of the Cape Verdean Football Federation. It is headquartered in the city of Praia. The association covers the municipalities of Praia, Ribeira Grande de Santiago and São Domingos.

The regional division was formed after the split of the Santiago Island League into the north (the Second Division was not created until 2015) and south zones in 2002 and the two are the youngest island leagues in Cape Verde, it featured clubs only from the municipality of Praia, Ribeira Grande de Santiago split in 2005 and featured from two parts up to 2010, clubs from São Domingos switched from the North to the South Zone in 2010 and increased the number of clubs in two divisions of the south zone, Garridos first played in the Second Division. It was the first island league to feature a second division league, it was once known as the second level. In the late 2000s and up to mid 2015, the league contained ten clubs in each of the two divisions. The championship has the most number of clubs in the country with the exception of the 2015-16 season which was second, currently it is shared with the island's North Zone. In the Second Division, it is one of three that has ten clubs, the others being the Santiago North Zone and Fogo.

The Santiago Island League was a regional championship played in all of Santiago Island until 2002 when it was broken up into two present divisions, the North and the South zones, Cape Verde. It formed a part of the Santiago Regional Football Association The winner of the championship had played in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season.

Praia is a concelho (municipality) of Cape Verde. It is situated in the southern part of the island of Santiago. Its seat is the city Praia, the capital of Cape Verde. Its area is 120.6 km2 (46.6 sq mi), and its population was 131,719 at the 2010 census. The municipality consists of one freguesia, Nossa Senhora da Graça. The city hall is located in the Platô part of the city.

São Domingos is a concelho (municipality) of Cape Verde. It is situated in the southeastern part of the island of Santiago. Its seat is the city São Domingos. Its population was 13,699 at the 2010 census, and its area is 147.5 km2.

It is another season featuring ten clubs, two new clubs competed for the first time, Relâmpago and Tira Chapêu.

Achada Grande Tras is a subdivision of the city of Praia in the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. Its population was 2,958 at the 2010 census. It is situated east of the city centre, and south of the Nelson Mandela International Airport. Adjacent neighbourhoods include Achada Grande Frente and Lem Ferreira to the west.

The 2005 Santiago South Premier Division season began on 8 January and finished on 24 April. Sporting won the regional competition and qualified into the 2005 Cape Verdean Football Championships. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All matches were played at Campo de Sucupira which was temporarily used up until 2007. The field no longer exists today and several buildings dominate the former field.

The 2005–06 Santiago Island League (South) season began on 3 December and finished on 4 May. Sporting again won the regional competition and qualified into the 2006 Cape Verdean Football Championships. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All matches were played at Estádio da Várzea and Campo de Sucupira, the latter which was temporarily used for one more season. The field no longer exists today and several buildings dominate the former field.
