The Fogo Second Division is a tier-3 regional championship played in Fogo Island, Cape Verde. The competition are organized by the Fogo Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol do Fogo, ARFF). [1] The winner of the championship plays in the Fogo Premier Division in the following season. Nova Era is the champion. For the 2016-17 season, a second placed club will qualify into the Premier Division.

Fogo is an island in the Sotavento group of Cape Verde. Its population is 35,837 (2015), with an area of 476 km². It reaches the highest altitude of all the islands in Cape Verde, rising to 2,829 metres above sea level at the summit of its active volcano, Pico do Fogo.

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).

The Fogo Regional Football Association is a football (soccer) association covering the island of Fogo. It is headquartered in the city of São Filipe, the island capital. The Fogo Premier Division is a regional championship played in Fogo Island, Cape Verde. The winner of the championship plays in the Cape Verdean football Championships of each season. Its current president is Pedro Fernandes Pires since September 2015.

About the Island/Regional League

The island league was formed in 1975 when Cape Verde became independent, unofficial competitions took place in years before the founding.

In the mid -1990s, it would become the next island league to also have a second division. The last place club were relegated, from around 2009, the ninth placed club plays with a runner up of the Second Division in a division decisional match. At that time, Fogo had the third most number of clubs in the nation. In 2017, two last placed clubs will be relegated and participate in the Second Division in the following season.

The Second Division started out with a point system, later Today, the second division features a group stage contaning groups A and B, the top 2 of each group advances into the semis and into the promotional final, the first place heads straight to the premier division, the second placed club plays a ninth place club in a division decisional match. Started in the 2016-17 season, it became the final phase where the top two promotes itself into the Premier Division in the following season.

In 2015, the Second Division started nearly a month after the end of the eruption.

In the Second Division on February 11, 2017, Nova Era defeated Brasilim 0-20 and made it the highest scoring match to date of any of the regional leagues and one of the highest in history. It put the club into the promotional zone and planned to put União out from ever returning to the Premier Division, instead, they put the club that they defeated Brasilim out and União qualified into the final phase as they were second in the group.

For the 2017-18 season, the group system are divided into portions of the island, the east (Group B) with the municipalities of Santa Catarina do Fogo and Mosteiros being included.
