The Santiago North Second Division is a tier-3 regional championship played in the northern part of Santiago Island, Cape Verde. The competition are organized by the Santiago North Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Santiago Norte, ARFSN). [1] The winner of the championship plays in the Santiago North Premier Division in the following season while the second placed club competes with a second last placed Premier Division club to participate in two divisional decisional matches to qualify into the Premier Division or remain in the Second Division in the following season.
Santiago is the largest island of Cape Verde, its most important agricultural centre and home to half the nation’s population. Part of the Sotavento Islands, it lies between the islands of Maio and Fogo. It was the first of the islands to be settled: the town of Ribeira Grande was founded in 1462. Santiago is home to the nation's capital city of Praia.
Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).
The Santiago North Regional Football Association is a football (soccer) association covering the north of the island of Santiago. It is headquartered in the city of Assomada, in the middle of the island. The winner of the championship plays in the Cape Verdean football Championships of each season. The football association is the second largest behind Boa Vista and ahead of Santo Antão South. The association are one of three championship competitions that play in more than one stadium.
The Second Division features ten clubs, the same as to that of the neighbouring Santiago South and another on the island of Fogo, being one of three in Cape Verde.
The Second Division was formed in 2004 has one portion. It was unsuccessful, a withdrawal of a club in around 0205 abandoned the Second Division and was not revived until 2015. It featured eight clubs, ten clubs would feature for the following season as the Premier Division reduced it to twelve clubs equalling to Santiago South's.
The 2016-17 Second Division went to a halt in February 7 as the referees needed the salaries for the 17th and the 26th rounds last season and the rounds of this season., [2] it did not resumed until February 25 as the referees were paid four days earlier by its sponsorship of two telecommunications companies, one of them was Cabo Verde Telecom and the municipalities where the clubs are based. [3]
Recently, the club number risen to twelve, it was likely done before the February strike as the Premier Division popularity in the nation is to that of Fogo and São Vicente. Juventude Assomada returned but some clubs like Real Júnior and Desportivo de Assomada withdrew and three new clubs arrived. Uncertain but the Second Division now risen to 14 clubs with two (or three) not competing. The regional association now boasts the most number of registered clubs in all of Cape Verde.
Unknown that there will be group stage or a Third Division for the following season as the club number may be 14 or 15, probably alongside Santiago South with its Third Division introduction.
