Clube Desportivo de Santa Cruz (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: Disportibu di Santa Kruz, São Vicente Crioulo: D'sportiv' d' Santa Kruz) is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Santiago Island League North Zone in Cape Verde. The team is based in the town of Santa Cruz in the central part of the island of Santiago and plays at Estadio Municipal 25 de Julho with a capacity of 1,000, the stadium was opened in 2008. The club is considered to be the top five best clubs of the North Zone but not number one. Since the implementation of the two tier regional system in 2015, Desportivo de Santa Cruz are one of ten unrelegated clubs of northern Santiago.

The Alfabeto Unificado para a Escrita do Caboverdiano, commonly known as ALUPEC, is the alphabet that was officially recognized by the Cape Verdean government to write Cape Verdean Creole.

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. Santa Cruz is a concelho (municipality) of Cape Verde. It is situated in the eastern part of the island of Santiago. Its seat is the city Pedra Badejo. Its population was 26,617 at the 2010 census, and its area is 112.2 km2.

History

The club was founded in 1979 and is the oldest club in the municipality. They played their first regional championship in 1999 after becoming a registered club in the late 1990s and played for the season of the inaugural North Zone.

The team has won the only title in 2002 for the Santiago Island League (North) and qualified into the single Island Championship where they lost to the South Zone champ Sporting Praia and lost the qualification into the National Championships.

Sporting Clube da Praia

Sporting Clube da Praia, short form: Sporting Praia is a professional football club that plays in the Santiago South Premier Division in Cape Verde. It is based in the capital city of Praia in the island of Santiago, one of the unrelegated clubs in the south of the island along with three of the city's four historically mightiest clubs including Académica, Boavista and CD Travadores. Along with Académcia, Boavista, Desportivo, Travadores and Vitória, it is one of several teams that share the same ground, Estádio da Várzea, which has a capacity of 8,000. Sporting has won six championships since independence and a few before independence. The first title was won in the summer of 1962 before independence. Sporting recently won the 2017 national title. Its current president is Carlos Daniel Caetano and its manager is Lito, who once played for Portuguese clubs as footballer.

Desportivo Santa Cruz celebrated its 25th anniversary of its foundation in 2004.

In the 2014-15 season, Desportivo Santa Cruz finished 1st behind Flor Jovem with 26 points in the first phase and was one of four who qualified, in the second phase, the club finished last with 6 points. At the final round, they had the worst match overall in the regions losing 0-6 to Beira Mar on May 3.

The club has got a club record for the 2015-16 season with 11 wins, 40 goals scored and 42 points. In points totals, it was third in the region behind Scorpion Vermelho with 61 and ahead of Estrela dos Amadores with 39. It is now fifth as it is now behind AJAC's 48 and Benfica de Santa Cruz's 46 and is remains to be ahead of Estrela dos Amadores's 39 points which is now shared with Grémio Nhágar of Assomada. The club started moderate for the 2016-17 season with 7th placed, it fallen to 10th after a loss to Benfica at the 5th round then in the relegation zone and then 12th after a defeat to Estrela dos Amadores on January 25. Later Santa Cruz defeated Juventus Assomada and got back 10th place. A win over ailing União Picos on March 11 brought the club to 9th place and lasted for two rounds as a loss to CD Flor Jovem da Calheta put it back to 10th. A goal draw with Varandinha at the 17th round kept the 9th position. Later, they made a scoreless draw with Estrela dos Amadores but the club was placed 10th. Their position was placed into uncertainty at the end of the season, there was a chance of relegation. Their relegation was avoided on May 13, the championship title went under a dispute until May 17 when AJAC was officially champions of the region. Desportivo Santa Cruz was officially 10th place, later the club became the next club to be relegated for the first time into the third tier competitions for the following season. Until their relegation, Desportivo Santa Cruz were the seven unrelegated original clubs of the Premier Division since its creation in 2004.

Estrela dos Amadores

Clube de Futebol Estrela dos Amadores is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Santiago Island League North Zone in Cape Verde. The team is based in the town of Tarrafal in the northern part of the island of Santiago and are one of the oldest clubs in the area. Since the implementation of the two tier regional system in 2015, Estrela dos Amadores are one of ten unrelegated clubs of the North Zone of Santiago.

AJAC or AJAX, full name Associação Juvenil Amigos de Calheta, also as Associação Juvenil Amigos de Calheta de São Miguel is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Santiago Island North League in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Calheta de São Miguel in the island of Santiago and plays at Estádio da Calheta located north of town center. Since the implementation of the two tier regional system in 2015, AJAC is one of ten unrelegated clubs of the North Zone of Santiago.

Grupo Desportivo Benfica de Santa Cruz, sometimes as Grupo Desportivo Benfica is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Santiago Island North League in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Calheta de São Miguel in the island of Santiago and plays at Estádio Municipal 25 de Julho located northwest of the city center. Since the implementation of the two tier regional system in 2015, the club are one of ten unrelegated clubs of northern Santiago.

Santa Cruz played its first ever Second Division match on November 26, 2017 and made a win over Nova Esperança (New Hope), a club that likely merged with Assomada. A two goal draw with Nhagar Association came before a loss to Esperança was made. Santa Cruz made two more wins. Recently they made three wins and is currently fourth which has a chance to return into the Premier Division next season.

Rivalry

Its club rivalry with Desportivo was Benfica de Santa Cruz forming the Pedra Badejo rivalry, the only rivalry in the middle of the island. The rivalry began around the start of the 2010s and is the newest in Cape Verde. As the club itself was relegated into the Second Division for the 2016-17 season, the rivalry came to an end. This was the shortest rivalry in regional football in Cape Verde.
