Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played with a spherical ball between two teams of eleven players. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field called a pitch with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by moving the ball beyond the goal line into the opposing goal.
Santiago is the largest island of Cape Verde, its most important agricultural centre and home to half the nation’s population. Part of the Sotavento Islands, it lies between the islands of Maio and Fogo. It was the first of the islands to be settled: the town of Ribeira Grande was founded in 1462. Santiago is home to the nation's capital city of Praia.
Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).
The season was to again featured 10 clubs, in the Premier Division, GD Varanda withdrew and third placed Tira Chapéu qualified into the Premier Division meaning that Varanda was effectively again a Second Division club and a non-competitior. Its matches that were to feature Tira Chapéu became bye week for a club. That reduced to a 72 match season. Uncertain that additional clubs will be added for the following season, and uncertain a Third Division may be introduced as to Santiago North due to additional clubs, that being non-existent in Cape Verde but not in Sāo Tomé and Príncipe which São Tomé Island has.
A total of 233 goals were scored, fewer than last season.
Unidos led the first round, Relâmpago took it at the second round, lost it at the third round, retook it at the fourth round and kept it for the remainder of the season. At the 15th round, Relâmpago became national champions.
Both Os Garridos and Vitória da Praia, once a powerful club and being a historic club were relegated last season after finishing in the last two positions, they will spend another season in the division as Os Garridos finished third and the latter finished eighth.
Calabaceira finished last place with 7 points with only a win and four draws.
