The 2017–18 Sal Second Division season was the 4th of the competition of the third-tier level of the football that took place in the island of Sal, Cape Verde. It started on December 29 and finished earlier on March 22. [1] The tournament was organized by the Sal Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Santiago Sul, ARFSS). [2] GD Oásis Atlântico won their only title will become the tenth participant to the Premier Division next season.
Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played with a spherical ball between two teams of eleven players. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field called a pitch with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by moving the ball beyond the goal line into the opposing goal.
Sal is an island in Cape Verde. It belongs to the northern group of islands, called Barlavento ("windwards"), and comprises a single administrative division, the municipality of Sal. Its seat is the city of Espargos.
Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).
A new club became registered and was GD Oásis Atlântico, a club that is based in the tourist section of Santa Maria with its hotel located there. It was the second season in four years that featured six clubs and each club with a total of 10 matches. The number of goals were 107, fewer than last season and an average of 3.567 per match.
Oásis Atlântico scored the most with 22, second was Verdun with 21, the least was Nova Geração with 11. On the opposites, Jovens Unidos, also as JURF conceded the most with 29, second was Nova Geração with 24 and the least was Oásis Atlântico with seven. [1]
Verdun Pedra de Lume became the first club to play in the division and the only club founded before 1990 to do so.
The first match of the season featuring Pretória and Verdun Pedra de Lume was rescheduled from December 29, 2017 as no police shown up, it was played on February 3, 2018. [1]
Sport Club Verdun is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. The team is based in the village of Pedra de Lume in the east of the island of Sal, though they play in Espargos' stadium, the home field which is made up of dirt is rarely used for practices. Its current chairman is Alcindo Conceição Silva and its current manager is Domingo Gomes who replaced Djulhiano Santos which he now manages Juventude.
