The 2017–18 Académica do Porto Novo season were in the island and top division of Cape Verdean football. Their season was shortened due that Tarrafal de Monte Trigo again did not compete, and two additional, Lajedos who was runner up last season and Associação Santo André, the region's least successful club. Their reasons was in part due to financial and material. This reduced to six clubs that participated in the competition with the last being in 2010, this would be less successful for Académica than the 2016 and the 2017 seasons, but they would be more successful than the six match 2012 season. The club won their 12th title [1] and became the next club to win eight consecutive titles of each island leagues, others are CS Mindelense of nearby São Vicente several times between the foundation up to 1994, Botafogo of Fogo in 1981 and Brava's Nô Pintcha in 1996. The title total has became to be one of the most number of clubs having the most regional titles. [1]

Football in Cape Verde

Football is the most popular sport in Cape Verde. The league is divided into eleven divisions, of which seven of them are singles and two islands, Santiago and Santo Antão has two zones since 2000. The football association is a federation which is known as the Cape Verdean Football Federation, it became affiliated with CAF in 1986 and later with FIFA in 2001.

Académica Porto Novo's regional championship titles covers more than half of the 24 regional titles won with the exception of some seasons in the late 1990s.

Santp Antão North Opening Tournament

Académica took part in their next opening tournament (or association cup), the next in three years, they would win another title.

Santo Antão South Zone Island League

The 2017-18 season was their eighth consecutive season that finished first place. It was a slightly more successful than the previous season and did not had a single loss. Académica currently has a 22 match unbeaten streak and its record still continues on home matches.

The 2016-17 Santo Antão Island League (South) season was the competition of the second-tier football in southern part the island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde. Its started on 12 November and finished on 26 March. The tournament was organized by the Santo Antão South Regional Football Association. Académica do Porto Novo won their 13th title and their 13th/15th overall and finished with 30 points and will participate in the 2018 Cape Verdean Football Championships in early April, second time in one of three groups, they will appear in Group A.

Académica Porto Novo finished with every match won and 51 goals scored, one of the highest in club history.

Uncommon in other leagues in other countries, some of the matches of different portions were mixed up and in different round which were not in order.

    Santo Antão South Cup

    On March 21, Académica Porto Novo defeated Marítimo in the regional cup final 2-1 at extra time and claimed their 13th cup title and is the most of any of the regional Capeverdean cup titles.

    Nonetheless in the 2017 edition played on December 16, the club defeated Os Sanjoanenses who was second place cup winner as the club were also cup winners and claimed their 7th Super Cup title after winning 4-0.

It is based in the town of Pombas, the seat of Paúl in the northeastern part of the island of Santo Antão and is being the main club of Vale do Paul. Its current manager is Alberto Teixeira. Its nickname is Encarnados, the same nickname of Portugal's S.L. Benfica and many other clubs affiliated to Benfica.     The 2016 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 37th beginner level competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. It started on 14 May and finished on 9 July, it started five days later than last season and finished two days earlier, the season was a week shorter than last. The championship was governed by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. The scheduling was completed on November 16 and the group system was kept insteading of becoming a one portion season without playoffs and was the last time. CS Mindelense won the record breaking title and became the second club after Sporting Praia to win four in a row, the highest ever, also it was Mindelense's last. Mindelense chose to not participate in the CAF Champions League competition in 2017, Académica do Porto Novo did not participate in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup, both of the clubs due to financial concerns, of any club, it is the eighth consecutive time and becomes the recent African nation not to bring a champion to the continentals for the most consecutive years, in the cup competition, Cape Verde is the longest for not bringing a club in Africa lasting for more than 15 years straight, not even the three national cup winners competed.
