The 2012 1. divisjon (women) season kicked off on 14 April 2012, and ended on 28 October 2012.

The 1. divisjon is the second highest division in women's football in Norway. It was founded in 1984. Between 1984 and 1995 it served as the first tier. 1. divisjon was replaced as a first tier by the Eliteserien which in turn was replaced by the Toppserien in 2000. It continued as a second tier from 1996 and onwards.

2011-champions Vålerenga and runner-up Fart were promoted to the Toppserien at the end of the 2011 season. They were replaced by Medkila and Linderud-Grei. Haugar and Manglerud Star were relegated at the end of the 2011 season after finishing in the bottom two places of the table. They were replaced by the two playoff-winners Kongsvinger and Åsane.

Vålerenga Fotball Damer is the women's football branch of Vålerenga Fotball. The team plays in Toppserien, Norway.

Fotballaget Fart is a Norwegian football club based in Vang outside Hamar. The club is most noted for their women's team which played in Toppserien in 2008 and 2012. Their home matches are played at Fartbana. Norway international footballers Thorstein Helstad and Kristin Bekkevold started their careers at Fart.

The Toppserien is the top level of women's association football in Norway. It was founded in 1984.

Outcome

At the end of the season the top team was to win promotion to Toppserien, the second team was to play off against the second from bottom team in Toppserien for promotion, while the bottom two teams were to be relegated to the 2. divisjon. In the event, Avaldsnes were champions and were promoted. Medkila came second, but lost the promotion playoff. However, the playoff winner, Kattem, subsequently withdrew their team, and Medkila were then promoted. Alta were offered the vacant place in the 2013 1. divisjon, but declined, opting for relegation. Voss were then offered the vacant place, and accepted it, thus avoiding relegation.

The 2012 Toppserien is the twenty-sixth season of top-tier women's football in Norway since its establishment in 1987. A total of 12 teams contested the league, ten returning from the 2011 season and the two teams promoted from the First Division, Vålerenga and Fart.

Avaldsnes Idrettslag is a Norwegian sports club from Avaldsnes, Karmøy, Rogaland. It was founded on 16 June 1937. The club has sections for football and handball.

Medkila IL's is a football team from Harstad in North Norway, most notable for its women's football team which is playing in the Toppserien, the first tier of Norwegian women's football.

Promotion play-offs

Medkila faced Kattem, who finished second last in Toppserien, in a two-legged play-off match for the right to play in the 2013 Toppserien.^[4] Kattem won the playoff, but subsequently withdrew their team from the league. Medkila were promoted to take their place in Toppserien.^[5]

Kattem IL is a Norwegian sports club from the neighborhood Kattem in Heimdal borough, Trondheim. It has sections for football, handball, ice hockey and skiing.
