The 2012 Fresno State Bulldogs football team represented California State University, Fresno in the 2012 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Bulldogs were led by first-year head coach Tim DeRuyter and played their home games at Bulldog Stadium. This was their first year as a member of the Mountain West Conference. They finished the season 9–4, 7–1 in Mountain West play to share the conference championship with Boise State and San Diego State. They were invited to the Hawaii Bowl where they were defeated by SMU.

Geographically, the MW covers a broad expanse of the Western United States, with member schools located in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The 2009 New Mexico Bowl was a post-season American college football bowl game, held on December 19, 2009, at University Stadium on the campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as part of the 2009–10 NCAA bowl season. The game, telecast on ESPN, featured the Wyoming Cowboys from the Mountain West Conference and the Fresno State Bulldogs from the WAC.This was the first trip to the New Mexico Bowl for Wyoming. It was also their first trip to a post season bowl game since the 2004 season when the Cowboys defeated the UCLA Bruins 24–21 in the Pioneer PureVison Las Vegas Bowl. This marked Fresno State's second straight trip to the New Mexico Bowl; they were defeated 40–35 by Colorado State in the 2008 contest. Before the 2009 New Mexico Bowl, Wyoming and Fresno State had played each other a total of six times, playing in consecutive years from 1992–1997 as rivals in the Western Athletic Conference; the teams have split their match-ups with each squad winning three games. The last meeting in 1997 was won by Fresno State, 24–7.

Timothy James DeRuyter is an American football coach and former player who is currently the defensive coordinator at Texas Tech University. He previously served in the same capacity at the University of Oregon in 2021 and prior to that he was the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at the University of California, Berkeley from 2017 to 2020 and head coach at California State University, Fresno from 2012 to 2016.

The 2012 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl was a postseason American college football bowl game held on Christmas Eve 2012, at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. The eleventh edition of the Hawaii Bowl, sponsored by Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, began at 3:00 p.m. HST and aired on ESPN. It featured the SMU Mustangs from Conference USA against the Mountain West Conference co-champion Fresno State Bulldogs, and was the final game of the 2012 NCAA Division I FBS football season for both teams. The Mustangs accepted their invitation after compiling a 6–6 record in the regular season, while the Bulldogs accepted their invitation with a 9–3 regular season record.

The 2014 Fresno State Bulldogs football team represented California State University, Fresno in the 2014 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Bulldogs were led by third-year head coach Tim DeRuyter and played their home games at Bulldog Stadium. They were members of the Mountain West Conference and completed in the West Division. They finished the season 6–8 overall and 5–3 in conference to tie for first place in the West Division, but due to their head-to-head win over San Diego State, they were crowned West Division champions. They lost to Mountain Division champion Boise State in the Mountain West Championship Game. They were invited to the Hawaii Bowl where they lost to Rice.

Lee Marks is an American football coach. He is the running backs coach for the Washington Huskies. He previously was the interim head football coach at Fresno State. He previously played running back for Boise State and in the Arena Football League.

The second annual LA Bowl, the game featured Fresno State from the Mountain West Conference and Washington State from the Pac-12 Conference. The game began at 12:37 p.m. PST and aired on ABC. It was one of the 2022–23 bowl games concluding the 2022 FBS football season. Sponsored by late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel and independent investment bank Stifel, the game was officially known as the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl presented by Stifel.

The 2023 New Mexico Bowl was a college football bowl game played on December 16, 2023, at University Stadium in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The 18th annual New Mexico Bowl game featured the New Mexico State Aggies of Conference USA and the Fresno State Bulldogs of the Mountain West Conference. The game began at aproximately 3:45 p.m. MST and was aired on ESPN. The New Mexico Bowl was one of the 2023–24 bowl games concluding the 2023 FBS football season. The game was sponsored the Isleta Pueblo and officially known as the Isleta New Mexico Bowl.
