Elena Olegovna Bovina is a professional tennis player from Russia. She reached her career-high singles ranking of World No. 14 in April 2005. Her best performance at a Grand Slam came when she got to the quarter finals of the 2002 US Open, defeating Clarisa Fernández, Jelena Dokic, Stéphanie Foretz and Francesca Schiavone before losing to Lindsay Davenport.

Adriana Pérez is a professional Venezuelan tennis player and member of the Venezuela Fed Cup team. On 14 April, 2014, she reached her highest WTA singles ranking of world number 186, whilst her best doubles ranking was world number 152, achieved on August 26, 2013.

The 1999 Australian Open – Women's Doubles was the women's dobules event of the eighty-seventh edition of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year and the most prestigious tournament in the Asia-Pacific and the Southern Hemisphere. Martina Hingis and Mirjana Lučić were the defending champions, but Hingis competed with Russian Anna Kournikova, and Lučić competed with Frenchwoman Mary Pierce. Lučić and Pierce were defeated in the first round by Christina Singer and Helena Vildová.
Hingis and Kournikova, however, ended up winning the title, defeating first seeds Lindsay Davenport and Natasha Zvereva, 7–5, 6–3. With this win, Hingis won her fifth consecutive Grand Slam title in doubles, and became the only woman to have won three consecutive Australian Open titles in singles and doubles simultaneously. Hingis and her partners defeated Davenport/Zvereva for all five consecutive women's doubles titles starting with the 1998 Australian and ending with the 1999 Australian Open.

Paula Ormaechea was the defending champion, but chose not to participate.

Andrea Gámiz and Paula Ormaechea were the defending champions, but Ormaechea chose not to participate. Gámiz partnered up with Adriana Pérez and successfully defended her title, the pair defeating Julia Cohen and Andrea Koch-Benvenuto in the final, 6–3, 6–4.

The 2012 John Newcombe Women's Pro Challenge was a professional tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts. It was the first edition of the tournament which was part of the 2012 ITF Women's Circuit. It took place in New Braunfels, Texas, United States, on 29 October–4 November 2012.

This was a new event in 2012. Melanie Oudin won the title, defeating Mariana Duque in the final, 6–1, 6–1.

Elena Bovina and Mirjana Lučić-Baroni were the defending champions, having won the event in 2012, but both chose not to participate in 2013.

Alizé Cornet was the defending champion, but lost to Camila Giorgi in the first round.
Unseeded Monica Puig won her first WTA title, defeating Sílvia Soler Espinosa in the final, 6–4, 6–3.
