The 2012 SWAC men's basketball tournament took place March 7–10 [1] at the Garland Special Events Center in Garland, Texas. The winner of the tournament received the Southwestern Athletic Conference's automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA tournament.

Format

Eight teams qualified for the tournament. Southern and Grambling each received one-year postseason bans in men’s basketball, thus not allowed to participate in the 2012 SWAC Tournament, due to failing to meet the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate requirements. [2] The rest of the seeds were determined after the final games were played [3]

The 2012 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament was held in Hot Springs, Arkansas from March 3 to March 6 at the Summit Arena and the Convention Center Court. Eleven Sun Belt teams participated in the tournament with seedings based on their conference record. Louisiana-Monroe did not compete in the 2012 Sun Belt Tournament due to failing to meet the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate requirements. This was Denver's final year in the Sun Belt due to the move to the Western Athletic Conference for the 2012–13 basketball season. Tournament first round games were played at the campus of the higher seeded team on March 6. The remainder of the tournament was held on March 9 and 10, 2018 at the Delmar Fieldhouse in Houston.

The 2018–19 Prairie View A&M Panthers basketball team represents Prairie View A&M University during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Panthers, led by third-year head coach Byron Smith, play their home games at the William Nicks Building in Prairie View, Texas as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 22-13, to finish in 1st place. In the SWAC Tournament, they defeated Alcorn State, Grambling State, and Texas Southern to win the SWAC championship. Therefore, they received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as a 16th seed. However, they lost to fellow 16th seed Fairleigh Dickinson in the First Four.

Hobdy Assembly Center in Grambling, Louisiana as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). They finished the season 4–24, 4–14 in SWAC play to finish in last place. The Tigers had received a one-year postseason ban in May 2011 due to poor academic performance and thus failed to quality for the 2012 SWAC tournament. It was Washington's final season as head coach for the Tigers as he was dismissed on March 19, 2012.
