The Alcorn State Braves basketball team is the men's basketball team that represents Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi, United States. The school's team currently competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

NCAA Division I

The Braves have appeared in the NCAA tournament six times. The Braves rank third in the SWAC for most NCAA appearances. Their record is 3–6, with their three wins being tied with Texas Southern for the most of any SWAC team. They are the only SWAC team to receive a top ten seed in the tournament (in 1980, the SWAC's first year in the tournament), and one of two (along with Southern) to advance to the regional quarterfinals (the round of 32).

Marino H. "The Godfather" Casem was an American college football coach and athletic administrator. He served as the head coach at Alabama State University (1963), Alcorn State University (1964–1985), and Southern University, compiling a career record of 159–93–8. Casem's Alcorn State Braves teams won four black college national championships and seven Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles. Casem also served as the athletic director at Alcorn State from 1966 to 1986 and at Southern from 1986 to 1999. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.

The Southern Illinois Salukis men's basketball team represents Southern Illinois University Carbondale in Carbondale, Illinois. The Salukis compete in the NCAA Division 1, and they play their home games at Banterra Center. As of March 2019, Saluki Hall of Fame basketball player, Bryan Mullins, has become the newest head coach of the Southern Illinois basketball program.

The Texas Southern Tigers basketball team is the basketball team that represents Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, United States. The team currently competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Their current head coach is Johnny Jones, who took over after Mike Davis took the Detroit Mercy head coaching job on June 5, 2018. Texas Southern has appeared in the NCAA tournament 11 times, and most recently in 2023. The Tigers play their home games at the Health and Physical Education Arena.

The Grambling State Tigers men's basketball team represents Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana. The school's team currently competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Grambling State has never qualified for the NCAA Division I Tournament since transitioning from Division II. They currently play their home games at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

The Bethune–Cookman Wildcats men's basketball team represents Bethune–Cookman University in the sport of basketball. The Wildcats compete in the NCAA Division I and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). They play their home games in Moore Gymnasium on campus in Daytona Beach, Florida. They are coached by former NBA player and Sacramento Kings coach Reggie Theus. The team has been playing since 1930, having joined Division I along with the rest of the conference in 1980.

Davey Lee Whitney Sr., also known as "The Wiz", was an American college basketball coach and the head basketball coach at Texas Southern University from 1964 to 1969 and Alcorn State University from 1969 to 1989 and 1996 to 2003. He amassed a total record of 566 wins and 356 losses in 33 seasons of coaching at both institutions.

The Braves finished the season 15–15, 13–5 in SWAC play to finish in second place. They lost to Mississippi Valley State in the quarterfinals of the SWAC tournament.

The 2016–17 Alcorn State Braves basketball team represented Alcorn State University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Braves, led by second year head coach Montez Robinson, played their home games at the Davey Whitney Complex in Lorman, Mississippi as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 18–14, 13–5 in SWAC play to finish in second place.

The 2017 SWAC men's basketball tournament was the postseason men's basketball tournament for the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Tournament first-round games were played at the campus of the higher seeded team on March 7. The remainder of the tournament was held on March 10 and 11, 2017 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Texas Southern, received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Alcorn State lost to Texas Southern in the championship game, but was ineligible for NCAA postseason play due to APR violations. Had Alcorn State beaten Texas Southern, Texas Southern would have still received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament because of its first place finish in the regular season.

The 2017–18 Alcorn State Braves basketball team represented Alcorn State University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Braves, led by third-year head coach Montez Robinson, played their home games at the Davey Whitney Complex in Lorman, Mississippi as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 11–21, 7–11 in SWAC play to finish in eighth place. Due to Grambling State's ineligibility, they received the No. 7 seed in the SWAC tournament where they lost in the quarterfinals to Prairie View A&M.

They finished the season 21–10, 11–3 in SWAC play to win the conference regular season. They also won the SWAC tournament to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as one of two No. 12 seeds in the Midwest region. The Braves defeated Houston Baptist 79–60, and then pushed No. 5 seed Kansas to the brink before falling, 57–56.

The 1982–83 Alcorn State Braves basketball team represented Alcorn State University during the 1982–83 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Braves, led by head coach Davey Whitney, played their home games at the Davey Whitney Complex and were members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 22–10, 10–4 in SWAC. They won the SWAC tournament to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as one of two No. 12 seeds in the Midwest region. The Braves defeated Xavier 81–75, and then played No. 5 seed Georgetown tough before falling, 68–63.
