The 2013 APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held on Tuesday 15 October 2013 at Vector Arena in Auckland, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. This is the first year the ceremony was held at Vector Arena, moving from its previous location of the Auckland Town Hall in order to accommodate more of APRA's 8000 New Zealand members. [1]

The Silver Scroll award was presented to Ella Yelich-O'Connor and Joel Little for "Royals" by Lorde, and singer-songwriter Dave Dobbyn was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. The award for The Most Performed Work Overseas went to Brooke Fraser and Scott Ligertwood for “Something in the Water”, ending the 13-year run of Neil Finn's Crowded House song "Don't Dream It's Over". Brenda Makamoeafi and Hassanah Iroegbu of 1990s hip hop duo Sisters Underground reunited to perform their 1994 hit "In the Neighbourhood". [2]

Silver Scroll award

The Silver Scroll award celebrates outstanding achievement in songwriting of original New Zealand pop music. The evening's music performances were produced by musician Godfrey De Grut. Each of the nominated songs were covered in a new style by another artist. The Silver Scroll award was presented by 1996 winner Bic Runga. [2]

In July 2013, a top-20 longlist was announced. From this list APRA members voted to decide the year's shortlist. [3] The voting period ran from 25 July to 18 August. [4]

New Zealand Music Hall of Fame

Musician, singer-songwriter and producer Dave Dobbyn was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. He is a three-time recipient of the Silver Scroll award. [5] He was inducted by musician Warren Maxwell, along with performances of three Dobbyn songs: "Language" by Tami Nielson, "It Dawned On Me" by Mark Vanilau and Scribe, and "Be Mine Tonight" by Shihad. [2]

Other awards

Four other awards were presented at the Silver Scroll Awards: APRA Maioha Award (for excellence in contemporary Maori music), [6] SOUNZ Contemporary Award (for creativity and inspiration in composition) [7] and two awards acknowledging songs with the most radio and television play in New Zealand and overseas. [8]

The APRA Maioha Award-winning song "Ruaimoko" was performed by Tama Waipara with the University of Auckland percussion ensemble, and the SOUNZ Contemporary Award-winning composition "Lightbox" was performed by the MPC Trio (Jeremy Toy, Lewis McCallum, and Johnnie Fleury). [9]

APRA song awards

Outside of the Silver Scroll Awards, APRA presented four genre awards in 2013. The APRA Best Pacific Song was presented at the Pacific Music Awards, the APRA Best Country Music Song was presented at the New Zealand Country Music Awards and the APRA Children's Song of the Year and What Now Video of the Year were presented at StarFest. APRA Professional Development Awards

Awarded biennially, the Professional Developments Awards is a cash prize given three artists to help build their musical career. Grants are awarded in three categories: pop/contemporary, film and television, and classical. In 2013, $12,000 and professional services were awarded to each recipient. [11]

The 2012 APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held on Thursday 13 September 2012 at the Auckland Town Hall, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. The Silver Scroll Award was presented to New York-based pop artist Stephanie Brown (Lips), and reggae band Herbs was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

The 2011 APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held on Tuesday 13 September 2011 at the Auckland Town Hall, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. The Silver Scroll Award was presented to Dave Baxter of Avalanche City for the song "Love Love Love", and pop-rock band Hello Sailor were inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

The 2010 APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held on Wednesday 8 September 2010 at the Auckland Town Hall, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. The Silver Scroll Award was presented to Alisa Xayalith, Thom Powers and Aaron Short of The Naked and Famous for their song “Young Blood”, and classic rock group The Fourmyula were inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. The evening also included a tribute to Pauly Fuemana of OMC, who had died in January 2010.

The 2009 APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at the Christchurch Town Hall, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. The Silver Scroll Award was presented to James Milne and Luke Buda for the Lawrence Arabia song "Apple Pie Bed", and musicians and academics Hirini Melbourne and Richard Nunns were inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

The 2008 APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held on Wednesday 10 September 2008 at the Auckland Town Hall, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. The Silver Scroll Award was presented to Jason Kerrison, Bobby Kennedy, Matt Treacy and Clinton Harris for the Opshop song "One Day", and the country duo Topp Twins were inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. The event also paid tribute to singer-songwriter Mahinārangi Tocker who had died earlier in 2008.

The 2007 APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held on Tuesday 18 September 2007 at the Auckland Town Hall, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. The Silver Scroll Award was presented to Brooke Fraser for her song "Albertine", and singer Jordan Luck was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame as its inaugural member. This was also the first year that the finalists and winners were selected by online votes by APRA members instead of an anonymous panel.

Joel Little is a New Zealand record producer, musician and Grammy Award-winning songwriter. He is best known for his work as a writer and producer with artists Lorde, Taylor Swift, Broods, Sam Smith, Imagine Dragons, Ellie Goulding, Khalid, Elliphant, Jarryd James, Shawn Mendes, Marina Diamandis, Amy Shark, Goodnight Nurse, Noah Kahan, Years & Years, the Jonas Brothers, and Niall Horan.

The 2006 APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held on Wednesday 20 September 2006 at the Auckland Town Hall, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. The Silver Scroll Award was presented to Don McGlashan for his song "Bathe In the River", originally performed by the Mt Raskil Preservation Society for the soundtrack of the New Zealand film No. 2. This was the final year where winners were selected by genre-specific panels of judges.

The 2014 APRA Silver Scroll Awards was held on Thursday 30 October 2014 at TSB Bank Arena in Wellington, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. It was the first time since 2004 that the awards were hosted in Wellington, with Auckland being the usual location.

The 2015 APRA Silver Scroll Awards was held on Thursday 17 September 2015 at Vector Arena in Auckland, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. The 2015 ceremony marked the 50th presentation of the Silver Scroll award. As well as honouring the best songwriting of 2015, the awards retrospectively awarded the best song of 1981 as previously no award was presented in that year.

The 2016 APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held on Thursday 29 September 2016 at Vector Arena in Auckland, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting.

The APRA Silver Scroll Awards for Most Performed New Zealand Work in New Zealand and Most Performed New Zealand Work Internationally were two annual awards presented to the New Zealand song that had been performed the most in New Zealand and internationally, respectively. The awards were presented by APRA AMCOS New Zealand, the copyright collective representing New Zealand composers, lyricists and music publishers. The awards were presented annually at the APRA Silver Scroll Awards. The award was last presented in 2015.

The 2017 New Zealand Music Awards was the 52nd holding of the annual ceremony featuring awards for musical recording artists based in or originating from New Zealand. It took place on 16 November 2017 at Spark Arena in Auckland and it was hosted by Jono Pryor and Ben Boyce. The awards show was broadcast live nationally on Three.

The 2017 APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held on Thursday 28 September 2017 at the Dunedin Town Hall in Dunedin, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. This was the first time the awards had been hosted in Dunedin.

Victoria Kelly is a New Zealand composer, arranger, and vocalist.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lips (band)</span> New Zealand music group

Lips is a New Zealand-based music group founded in 2010 by New Zealander singer and keyboardist Steph Brown in New York City. American multi-instrumentalist/producer Fen Ikner joined in 2012, with Ruby Walsh and Maude Morris rounding out the current lineup. Lips is visually represented by the character of "Lips," a girl with giant lips for a head, who appears in their cover art and music videos. The band has released three EPs, one LP, several singles, and produced the 2016 soundtrack of the stage play Daffodils, which they performed in and served as music directors, as well as the OST for the 2019 film version of Daffodils. The band’s song "Everything to Me" won them the 2012 Silver Scroll Award.

Maisey Rika is a New Zealand singer, songwriter and composer, performing in both English and Māori. Her five original albums have each reached the Top 40 in the Official New Zealand Music Chart. She was named an Arts Foundation Laureate in 2021, has received awards at the Waiata Māori Music Awards and APRA Awards, including APRA Best Māori Songwriter in 2010 and 2013, and has twice won Best Māori Language Album at the NZ Music Awards.
