The 2013 Buffalo Bulls football team represented the University at Buffalo in the 2013 NCAA Division I FBS football season. They were led by fourth-year head coach Jeff Quinn and played their home games at University at Buffalo Stadium. They completed as a member of the East Division of the Mid-American Conference. They finished the season 8–5, 6–2 in MAC play to finish in second place in the East Division. They were invited to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, only the second bowl game in school history, where they were defeated by San Diego State.

UConn represented the Big East Conference in the game; Buffalo entered as the Mid-American Conference (MAC) champion.

It began at 3:30 p.m. MST and aired on ESPN. It was one of the 2013–14 bowl games that concluded the 2013 FBS football season. San Diego State defeated Buffalo, 49–24.

They were led for the season's first seven games by fifth-year head coach Jeff Quinn before his midseason firing on October 13, and by interim head coach Alex Wood for the remainder of the season. The team played their home games at University at Buffalo Stadium and competed as a member of the East Division of the Mid-American Conference. They fished the season 5–6, 3–4 in MAC play to finish in third place in the East Division. They only played 11 games due to their November 19 game vs Kent State being canceled due to inclement weather. The failure to reschedule that canceled game cost the Bulls a chance at bowl eligibility.

The 2015 Northern Illinois Huskies football team represented Northern Illinois University as a member of the West Division of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) during the 2015 NCAA Division I FBS football season. Led by third-year head coach Rod Carey, the Huskies compiled an overall record of 8–6 with a mark of 6–2 in conference play, finishing in a four-way tie for the MAC West Division title with Central Michigan, Toledo, and Western Michigan. Northern Illinois advance to the MAC Championship Game, where they lost to Bowling Green. The Huskies were invited to the Boca Raton Bowl, to the Poinsettia Bowl, where they were defeated by Boise State. The team played home games at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb, Illinois.

Led by first-year head coach Lance Leipold, the Bulls compiled an overall record of 5–7 with a mark of 3–5 in conference play, placing fourth in the MAC's East Division. The team played their home games at University at Buffalo Stadium in Amherst, New York.

The 2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season was the highest level of college football competition in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The regular season began on August 26, 2016, and ended on December 10, 2016. The postseason concluded on January 9, 2017, with the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship, where the Clemson Tigers defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide to claim their second national title in school history. The championship game was a rematch of the 2016 edition won by Alabama.

The Bulls finished the season 6–6, 4–4 in MAC play to finish in a tie for third place in the East Division. Despite being bowl-eligible, the Bulls did not receive an invitation to a bowl game.

The 2021 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl was a college football bowl game played on December 21, 2021, with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. EST on ESPN. It was the 25th edition of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, and it featured the Kent State Golden Flashes of Mid-American Conference and the Wyoming Cowboys of the Mountain West Conference. It was one of the 2021–22 bowl games concluding the 2021 FBS football season. The game was sponsored by the Idaho Potato Commission.
