The game matched #8 Southern Oregon (12–2) against #7 Marian (11–2). [1]
The championship game was played at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach, Florida. A total of sixteen teams participated in the single-elimination tournament from across the country. Placement in the tournament was based on the final edition of the 2014 NAIA Coaches' Poll. This year's field included all but one of the top 17 teams from the final poll.
This was a new venue for the championship game, which had been contested for the past six years at Barron Stadium in Rome, Georgia.

The NCAA Division II football championship is an American college football tournament played annually to determine a champion at the NCAA Division II level. The game matched the once-beaten and 5th-ranked Knights from Marian University against the undefeated and 3rd-ranked Mustangs from Morningside College. The game matched two teams making their first appearance in the championship game, assuring someone would win the title for the first time. The teams proved to be evenly matched, and the outcome was not decided until the winning points were scored in the first round of overtime. With their winning field goal, the Marian Knights prevailed, 30-27 in the first overtime game in NAIA football championship history.

The game featured two undefeated teams that met in the semifinal round of the 2016 tournament, including the defending national champions, the #1-ranked Saint Francis Cougars. Their opponent was the #2-ranked Reinhardt Eagles, in only the 5th year of the program's existence. In the end, it was Saint Francis that prevailed by a final score of 24–13. This was only the 5th time a team has managed back-to-back championships in the history of NAIA football.
The 2011 Saint Francis Cougars football team represented the University of Saint Francis, located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in the 2012 NAIA football season. They were led by head coach Kevin Donley, who served his 14th year as the first and only head coach in the history of Saint Francis football. The Cougars played their home games at Bishop John D'Arcy Stadium and were members of the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League (MEL). The Cougars finished in 3rd place in the MSFA MEL division, but they received an at-large bid to participate in the postseason NAIA playoffs.

In their fourth season under head coach Craig Howard, the Raiders compiled a 13–2 record and won the NAIA national championship, defeating Marian (Indiana), 55–31, in the NAIA National Championship Game.
