Elena Baltacha was the defending champion, having won the event in 2013, but retired at the end of the season and died in May 2014 of liver cancer.
Shahar Pe'er was the defending champion, having won the event in 2013, however she chose not to participate.

Grönefeld teamed up with Demi Schuurs, but lost in the first round to Gabriela Dabrowski and Jeļena Ostapenko.

Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka defeated Ashleigh Barty and Victoria Azarenka in the final, 7–5, 7–5, to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2019 US Open.
Caroline Wozniacki was the defending champion, but lost to Naomi Osaka in the semifinals.
Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka defeated Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková in the final, 6–2, 6–3, to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2021 Australian Open. This was Mertens and Sabalenka's second Grand Slam doubles title as a team after they first won the 2019 US Open. By virtue of winning the title, Sabalenka claimed the world No. 1 doubles ranking.
Zoe Hives and Astra Sharma were the defending champions, having won the last edition in 2019, however Hives chose not to participate. Sharma played alongside Aliona Bolsova, but lost in the semifinals to Elixane Lechemia and Ingrid Neel.
