On the night of 26 April 2015,a severe storm hit areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,Pakistan, causing considerable damage in the cities of Peshawar,Nowshera, and Charsadda. [1] The storm featured heavy rains accompanied by hail and high-speed winds of over 120 kilometers per hour (or 75 miles per hour). [2] As a result of the storm's damaging effects,45 people were killed and over 200 were wounded. [2]
The storm occurred after parts of Pakistan were already partially flooded from prior rainfall in February 2015,up to a meter (or three feet) deep in some places. [1] The storm also collapsed many buildings’walls and roofs, took down many electricity poles, and killed livestock and damaged many crops in rural Peshawar and Charsadda (including wheat crops and orchards). [1] [2]
After the storm, many people remained injured or without drinkable water, food, and shelter. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government organized and sent members of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PMDA) and the military to aid with rescue and recovery efforts in the areas affected. [1] [2] [3]
Subsequent wind, rain and hail in the aftermath of the cyclone disrupted the power supply and telecommunication services in the region. [4] The storm was informally dubbed a “mini-cyclone”in the press. [4] Later analysis by the Pakistan Meteorological Department determined that the event was a tornado. [5]
Heavy weather on the next day forced the Pakistani military to cancel two flights to Nepal taking supplies to survivors of the earthquake on the previous day. [4]
Intense Tropical Cyclone Leon–Eline was the second longest-lived cyclone in the Indian Ocean, behind Cyclone Freddy, traveling over 11,000 km (6,800 mi) during its 29-day track through the Indian Ocean, throughout the month of February. The cyclone formed on 1 February 2000,in the Australian basin as Tropical Cyclone Leon, and was renamed Eline after crossing 90° E into the South-West Indian Ocean;there, the Météo-France office in Réunion (MFR) tracked the storm's movement and intensity. Late on 17 February,Eline made landfall near Mahanoro,Madagascar, with 10‑minute winds of 165 km/h (103 mph). The storm rapidly weakened over land, but restrengthened in the Mozambique Channel to reach peak 10‑minute winds of 185 km/h (115 mph),making it an intense tropical cyclone. On 22 February,Eline made landfall about 80 km (50 mi) south of Beira,Mozambique, near peak intensity. Eline quickly weakened over land as it moved across Southern Africa, finally dissipating over eastern Namibia on 29 February.
Severe storms in Australia refers to the storms, including cyclones, which have caused severe damage in Australia. For comparison,a comprehensive list of all damaging storms can be found on the Australian Bureau of Meteorology website.

Pakistan's climate varies from a continental type of climate in the north,a mountainous dry climate in the west (Baluchistan),a wet climate in the East (Punjab) an arid climate in the Thar Desert,to a tropical climate in the southeast (Sindh),characterized by extreme variations in temperature, both seasonally and daily, because it is located on a great landmass barely north of the Tropic of Cancer.
At least 29 tropical cyclones have affected Myanmar,a country adjacent to the Bay of Bengal in mainland Southeast Asia. Myanmar has witnessed some of the deadliest storms in the Bay of Bengal, including Cyclone Nargis in May 2008,which struck the low-lying Irrawaddy Delta near Yangon. Its winds and storm surge killed an estimated 140,000 people and left nearly $10 billion in damage. The country's worst natural disaster in the 20th century was a cyclone in 1968,which killed more than 1,000 people when it hit Rakhine State in northwestern Myanmar. One of the most powerful storms to ever hit the country was Cyclone Mocha, which it moved ashore northwestern Myanmar in May 2023,killing at least 413 people.
Severe Tropical Storm Linfa, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Chedeng, brought deadly flooding to areas of the Philippines and Japan in May and June 2003. The fourth named storm within the northwestern Pacific that year,Linfa developed as a tropical depression just off the western coast of Luzon on May 25. The disturbance quickly intensified to reach tropical storm intensity a few hours after cyclogenesis. However, intensification leveled off as Linfa executed a small clockwise loop before a subsequent landfall on Luzon on May 27. Due to land interaction the storm temporarily weakened and decoupled before reforming in the Philippine Sea. Afterwards Linfa began reintensifying and reached its peak intensity on May 29 with maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h (65 mph) and a barometric pressure of 980 mbar. Following its peak the tropical storm began to deteriorate and transitioned into an extratropical cyclone on May 30;these extratropical remnants continued to track northward through Japan before dissipating in the Sea of Okhotsk on June 4.

Typhoon Faith, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Norming, struck both the Philippines and Vietnam during December 1998. A tropical disturbance developed within the vicinity of the western Caroline Islands during early December. At midday on December 8,the system developed into a tropical depression. Tracking northwest at a brisk pace, the depression gradually intensified, and was upgraded into a tropical storm at noon on December 9. Quickly intensifying,Faith turned to the west-northwest,and after tracking near Samar Island on the evening of December 10,Faith attained typhoon intensity. After clipping the northern tip of Palawan Island, the typhoon entered the South China Sea at peak intensity. Across the Philippines,33 people were killed, with 30 others wounded and 36 others listed missing. A total of 6,423 homes were damaged and 3,234 houses were destroyed, leaving more than 20,000 homeless. Damage was estimated at $25.9 million, with $6.82 million from crops,$15.9 million from public infrastructure, and $3.37 million from private infrastructure.
From February to April 2019,widespread flash flooding affected large parts of Pakistan, most severely in Balochistan,KPK,Punjab, and other provinces. Pakistan has been hit by three major waves of rain and flooding over the course of more than one month. The first wave of rain began on 20 February, leading to flooding in to Khyber and Balochistan, therefore many villages and several cities have been evacuated, and more than 1,500 families has been rescued alone in Balochistan and many in other states. The 20 February rain and thunderstorms caused flash floods in the Lasbela area. The main areas affected were Turbat,Tump,Nasirabad and Dasht where 300 people were displaced due to the flood. These people were then moved to camps established by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). Casualties have came mostly due to roof collapsing amid heavy rains and flash flooding. Khyber Pakhtunwkha has witnessed the most deaths till now,40,alongside Balochsitan has faced 26 casualties with more than 9 in Punjab and other places. Due to rain, flood and storm casualties are increasing.
At least 30 tropical cyclones have affected the Southern African mainland. Three southeastern African countries border the Indian Ocean –Tanzania,Mozambique, and South Africa. Other inland countries also experience the effects of tropical cyclones, including Botswana,Eswatini,Lesotho,Malawi,Namibia,Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Belize, formerly known as British Honduras,is a Caribbean country located on the northeastern coast of Central America. Severe Tropical Storm Chalane was the first of three consecutive tropical cyclones that struck Mozambique in the 2020-21 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season. As the fourth tropical depression, third named storm, and second severe tropical storm of the season,Chalane developed out of a zone of disturbed weather which was first monitored RSMC La Réunion on 19 December. Despite conditions slowly becoming unfavorable, the system formed into a tropical depression on 23 December due to the presence of a Kelvin wave and an equatorial Rossby wave,as well as warm sea surface temperatures. The depression soon strengthened into Tropical Storm Chalane on the following day. Chalane made landfall on Madagascar on 26 December and weakened, before emerging into the Mozambique Channel a couple days later. Subsequently,Chalane restrengthened, before making landfall on Mozambique on 30 December. The system weakened as it moved inland, degenerating into a remnant low later that day. However,Chalane's remnants continued moving westward for another several days, emerging into the South Atlantic on 3 January, before dissipating later that day.
In 2016 Pakistan experienced higher rainfall than normal (10-20%),especially in the pre-monsoon season. Heavy monsoon rains are common in the region. This led to multiple periods of flooding, landslides, and damage particularly in Northern Pakistan. The Swat River overflowed and multiple landslides occurred around Pakistan including in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,Gilgit-Baltistan,Azad Jammu, and Kashmir.
