The 2016–17 Prva A Liga, known as Erste košarkaške lige by sponsorship reasons, is the 11th season of the Montenegrin Basketball League, the top tier basketball league on Montenegro. Budućnost VOLI is the defending champion.
Montenegro is a country in Southeastern Europe on the Adriatic Sea. It borders Bosnia and Herzegovina to the north; Serbia and Kosovo to the east, Albania to the south and Croatia to the west. Montenegro has an area of 13,812 square kilometres and a population of 678,000, most of whom are Orthodox Christians. Its capital Podgorica is one of the twenty-three municipalities in the country. Cetinje is designated as the Old Royal Capital.
KK Budućnost, currently known as Budućnost VOLI for sponsorship reasons is a professional basketball club from Podgorica, Montenegro. The team currently competes in Montenegrin Basketball League, Adriatic League and EuroLeague. It is a part of Budućnost sports society.
Nine of the eleven teams that play the league join the regular season and play a three-round robin competition where the six first qualified teams join the playoffs with the two 2016–17 ABA League teams (Budućnost Voli and Mornar). The last qualified team is relegated. [1]
The 2016–17 ABA League was the 16th season of the ABA League, with 14 teams from Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Macedonia participating in it. It started on September 29, 2016 with the first round of the regular season and the regular season ended on March 13, 2017 followed by playoffs of the four best placed teams. The Play-offs were played from March 18 till April 13, 2017. Crvena zvezda won its third ABA League championship, after beating Cedevita 3–0 in the Finals.

Budućnost VOLI and Mornar joined directly the playoffs as they participated in the 2016–17 ABA League. The finals were played with a 1-1-1-1-1 format, playing Budućnost VOLI games 1, 3 and 5 at home.

The Sports in Montenegro revolves mostly around team sports, such as football, basketball, water polo, volleyball, and handball. Other sports involved are boxing, tennis, swimming, judo, karate, athletics, table tennis, and chess.
Most popular sport is football. Among many great players from Montenegro were Dejan Savićević, Predrag Mijatović, Mirko Vučinić or Stevan Jovetić. Montenegrin national football team, founded at 2006, played in playoffs for UEFA Euro 2012, which is the biggest success in the history of national team.
Water polo is often considered the national sport. Montenegro's national team is one of the top ranked teams in the world, winning the gold medal at the 2008 Men's European Water Polo Championship in Málaga, Spain, and winning the gold medal at the 2009 FINA Men's Water Polo World League, which was held in Montenegrin capital, Podgorica. Montenegrin team PVK Primorac from Kotor became a champion of Europe at the LEN Euroleague 2009 in Rijeka, Croatia.
The Montenegro national basketball team is also known for good performances and had won a lot of medals in the past as part of the Yugoslavia national basketball team. In 2006, the Basketball Federation of Montenegro along with this team joined the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) on its own, following the Independence of Montenegro. Montenegro participated on two Eurobaskets until now.
Among women sports, the national handball team is the most successful, having won the 2012 European Championship and finishing as runner-ups at the 2012 Summer Olympics. ŽRK Budućnost Podgorica won two times EHF Champions League.
The Prva A liga, for sponsorships reasons named the Erste Liga, is the top-tier professional basketball league in Montenegro. It is the highest basketball division organized by the Basketball Association of Montenegro (KSCG). It was established in 2006. shortly after Montenegro declared its independence from Serbia and Montenegro.
Boris Bakić is a Montenegrin professional basketball player who played for Zrinjski Mostar of the Basketball Championship of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Nemanja Gordić is a Bosnian-Serb professional basketball player for Budućnost VOLI of the ABA League, the Montenegrin League and the EuroLeague. He also represents the senior Bosnia and Herzegovina national basketball team internationally.
Kyle Landry is a Canadian professional who last basketball played for Budućnost VOLI of the ABA League and the Montenegrin League. He also represents the senior Canadian national basketball team. He is a power forward-center.
KK Mornar is a professional basketball club from Bar, Montenegro. The club currently participates in the Montenegrin Basketball League and the ABA League.
Nikola Ivanović is a Montenegrin professional basketball player for Budućnost VOLI of the ABA League, the Montenegrin League and the EuroLeague. Standing at 1.90 m, he plays the point guard position.

Clubs from Montenegro are playing in European basketball competitions since the 1980s. Until 2006, they represented SFR Yugoslavia and FR Yugoslavia. Almost all European seasons by Montenegrin clubs are played by KK Budućnost. Exceptions are two single seasons in European competitions played by KK Lovćen Cetinje and KK Mornar Bar.
Mihailo Pavićević is a Montenegrin professional basketball coach and former player. He currently works as the head coach for Mornar of the Montenegrin Basketball League, the ABA League and the FIBA Europe Cup.
The 2017–18 ABA League First Division was the 17th season of the ABA League with 12 teams from Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Macedonia participating in it. It was the inaugural season as the first tier as a part of two level competition.

Milić Starovlah, is a Montenegrin professional basketball player for Budućnost VOLI of the ABA League, the Montenegrin League and the EuroLeague. Starovlah is member of young Montenegro national basketball team. After a brief spell developing at the Torrejón Basketball Academy in Spain, Stravolah finished his basketball upbringing in the Balcans. Currently he is the third youngest player on Budućnost VOLI EuroLeague roster for the 2018-2019 season.
The 2018 ABA League Playoffs is the play-off tournament that decides the winner of the 2017–18 ABA League First Division season. The playoffs started on March 18, 2018 and ended on April 14, 2018. The winner of the play-offs qualifies for the 2018–19 EuroLeague.
