In the 2016 season, Galway started their campaign winning their 6th FBD Insurance League title with a win over Roscommon. Galway ended Mayo's bid for a 6th consecutive Connacht Senior Football Championship title with an unlikely 3 point victory in McHale Park. In the All-Ireland quarter-final Galway were defeated by Tipperary. [1]

The Galway–Tipperary fixture is a traditional hurling rivalry dating back to 1888. Tipperary have traditionally been one of the strongest teams in the Munster Championship while Galway have won five All-Ireland Senior hurling titles, including defeating Tipperary in the 1988 All-Ireland Hurling Final. There is no present Connacht Championship, so since 2009 Galway have played in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship.

The championship began on 23 April 2017 and ended on 3 September 2017. The draw for the championship was held on 13 October 2016 and was broadcast live on RTÉ2.

The 2018 All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship was the 55th and last staging of the All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1964. The championship began on 7 May 2018 and ended on 26 August 2018.
