The 2016 Gulf Ice Hockey Championship was the fourth Gulf Ice Hockey Championship. It took place between 28 January and 2 February 2016 in Doha, Qatar. The United Arab Emirates won the tournament after defeating Qatar in the gold medal game, claiming their fourth title of the championships. Kuwait finished third after defeating Oman in the bronze medal game.

Overview

The 2016 Gulf Ice Hockey Championship was organised by the Qatar Winter Sports Committee and began on 28 January 2016 in Doha, Qatar with the games being played at Villagio’s Ice Court. [1] Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates all returned for their fourth Gulf Ice Hockey Championship's while hosts Qatar returned to compete in their second appearance of the tournament. [1] The four teams first competed in a round-robin competition, with their ranking determining their seeding in the semi-finals. [2] The United Arab Emirates finished the round-robin in first place after winning all three of their games and were seeded against fourth placed Oman who had failed to win any of their games. [2] [3] Kuwait finished the round-robin in second place after beating both Oman in their opening game and Qatar before losing to the United Arab Emirates in their third game. [2] [4] [5] Hosts Qatar finished in third place after defeating Oman 5–3 in their final round-robin match. [2]

The United Arab Emirates opened the playoff round with a 5–0 shutout against Oman and advanced to the gold medal match against Qatar who had defeated Kuwait 5–3 in their semifinal. [6] The United Arab Emirates won the tournament after defeating Qatar 5–0 in the gold medal match, winning their fourth championship title. [7] Qatar picked up their first silver medal at the championship having previously won bronze in 2014. [7] Kuwait finished third after defeating Oman 5–4 in the bronze medal game. [2]

Round-robin

The four participating teams were placed in a single round robin. After playing the round-robin, the number one ranked team is seeded into a semi-final against the fourth ranked team and the second ranked team plays in the second semi-final against the team who finished in third place.

The inaugural tournament took place on May 25 to May 30 in Kuwait City, Kuwait, and was organized by the Kuwait Ice Hockey Association. The championship has featured teams from six countries since its formation and currently consists of Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The United Arab Emirates has won all four editions of the championship, while Kuwait has finished second on three occasions and Qatar on one.

Oman is currently not ranked in the IIHF World Ranking and have not entered in any World Championship tournaments or at any Olympic Games, but have played in the Challenge Cup of Asia, a regional tournament for lower-tier hockey nations in Asia.

Chinese Taipei, winners of the 2010 tournament competed after skipping the 2011 tournament. The United Arab Emirates won the tournament after defeating Thailand in the final and Malaysia finished in third after defeating Kuwait in the bronze medal match.

The 2012 Gulf Ice Hockey Championship was the second Gulf Ice Hockey Championship. It took place between 28 May and 1 June 2012 in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. The United Arab Emirates won the tournament after defeating Kuwait in the gold medal game, claiming their second title of the championships. Oman finished third after defeating Bahrain in the bronze medal game.

The Oman Ice Sports Committee (OISC) is the governing body of ice hockey in Oman. It joined the International Ice Hockey Federation in 2014 as an associate member, the fourth country from the Persian Gulf region to join the IIHF.

The 2013 IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia was the 6th IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia, an annual international ice hockey tournament held by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). It took place between 16 March and 24 March 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand. The Chinese Taipei won the tournament after defeating Hong Kong in the final and Mongolia finished in third after defeating Kuwait in the bronze medal match. The defending champions, the United Emirates were knocked out of the playoff round in the quarterfinals by Hong Kong.

The 2014 Gulf Ice Hockey Championship was the third Gulf Ice Hockey Championship. It took place between 6 and 12 June in Kuwait City, Kuwait. The United Arab Emirates won the tournament after defeating Kuwait in the final, claiming their third title. Qatar finished third place after defeating Oman in the third place game.

The 23rd Arabian Gulf Cup was the 23rd edition of the biennial football competition for the eight members of the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation. It took place in Kuwait from 22 December 2017 until 5 January 2018. Oman won their second title, defeating the United Arab Emirates in the final on penalties following a goalless draw.

The 2019 IIHF Women's Challenge Cup of Asia Division I was an international women's ice hockey tournament run by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The tournament took place between 14 April and 19 April 2019 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and was the fifth edition held since its formation in 2014 under the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia series of tournaments. The tournament made up the second level of competition sitting below the 2019 IIHF Women's Challenge Cup of Asia. The Philippines won the tournament after finishing first in the standings. The United Arab Emirates finished in second place and India finished third.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kuwait women's national ice hockey team</span>

The Kuwait women's national ice hockey team is the ice hockey team representing Kuwait internationally in women's competition. The team is overseen by the Kuwait Ice Hockey Association, a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The team was formed in 2017 and currently competes in the IIHF Women's Challenge Cup of Asia Division I tournament.

The 2022 GCC Women's Gulf Cup was a women's T20I cricket (WT20I) tournament played in Oman from 20 to 26 March 2022. Organised by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the tournament featured the women's national teams of Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia played their first official WT20I matches during this tournament.
