The 2016 Men's Hockey Champions Trophy was the 36th edition of the Hockey Champions Trophy for men. It was held between 10 and 17 June 2016 in London, United Kingdom. [1]

Contents

Australia won the tournament for a record fourteenth time after defeating India 3–1 in the final on a penalty shoot-out after a 0–0 draw. [2]

Host city change

When the FIH unveiled the event hosts for the 2015–2018 cycle, Argentina was chosen to host this tournament for the first time. [3] After the success of the 2012–13 Women's World League Final played in San Miguel de Tucumán, in early 2015 this city was announced as the host for the 2016 edition of the Champions Trophy. [4] However, in March 2016, the FIH had to terminate all contractual agreements with Argentina as the Argentine Hockey Confederation was unable to fulfil their contractual obligations in regards to television rights, sponsorship and the hosting of events. London was announced as the host instead. [5]

Format

After three editions with two different formats, it was decided to go back to the same one used up until the 2010 edition which consisted of a six-team, round robin tournament.

Qualification

A change in the qualification process was decided, similar to the one used up until 2010. Alongside the host nation, the last Olympic, World Cup and World League champions qualify automatically as well as the winner of the 2014 Champions Challenge I. The remaining spot will be nominated by the FIH Executive Board, making a total of 6 competing teams. If teams qualify under more than once criteria, the additional teams will be invited by the FIH Executive Board as well. [6]

Pakistan mens national field hockey team

The Pakistan national field hockey team is administered by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), the governing body for hockey in Pakistan. They have been a member of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) since 1948 and founding member of the Asian Hockey Federation (ASHF) which formed in 1958. Pakistan is the most successful national field hockey team in the Hockey World Cup with four championships: 1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994. Pakistan also has the best overall performance in World Cup history in both proportional and absolute terms with 53 victories in 84 matches played, seven time draws, six appearances in the finals and only 24 losses. Pakistan national team has played in all FIH World Cup editions with only one absence in 2014. The green shirts is also one of the most successful national teams in the Asian Games with eight gold medals: 1958, 1962, 1970, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1990 and 2010, the highest number of times a country has come first, and the only Asian team to have won the prestigious Champions Trophy with three championships: 1978, 1980 and 1994. Pakistan have won a total of 29 official international titles to professional and grassroots level selections, with three gold medals in the Olympic Games field hockey tournaments in Rome 1960, Mexico City 1968 and Los Angeles 1984. However, Pakistan could not qualify for Olympics since 2012.

The 1995 Women's Hockey Champions Trophy was the 5th edition of the Hockey Champions Trophy for women. It was held between 9–17 September 1995 in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

The 2009 Women's Hockey Champions Trophy was the 17th edition of the Hockey Champions Trophy for women. It was held between 11 and 19 July 2009 in Sydney, Australia.

2010 Womens Hockey Champions Trophy

The 2010 Women's Hockey Champions Trophy was the 18th edition of the Hockey Champions Trophy for women. It was held between 10–18 July 2010 in Nottingham, England.

The tournament doubled as the qualifier to the 2014 Women's Hockey Champions Trophy to be held in Argentina as the winner earned an automatic berth to compete.

Field hockey at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Mens tournament

The men's field hockey tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics was the 23rd edition of the field hockey event for men at the Summer Olympics. It took place over a thirteen-day period beginning on 6 August, and culminated with the medal finals on 18 August. All games were played at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Deodoro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
