Sannuvanda Kushalappa Uthappa (born 2 December 1993) is an Indian professional field hockey player who plays as an attacking midfielder for the India national team and Kalinga Lancers at the Hockey India League.
S. K. Uthappa made his international debut in 2012 and has since made over 100 appearances for the national team. He was a part of the team that won silver at the 2016 Champions Trophy. [1]
Uthappa picked up the sport as a profession at the age of eight after watching his brother play hockey for Bangalore University as he grew up. Then a student of Lions School, Gonikoppal in Karnataka's Kodagu district, he was actively involved in sports and won competitions of badminton, football, basketball and hockey. He holds the Karnataka State record for most goals scored (16) in a five-game inter-district tournament, when he played for his district, Kodagu. [2]
Uthappa took to hockey professionally at 14 and joined the Sports Authority of India, Bangalore, in 2004. [3] There he represented his school St. Joseph's Indian High School, and St. Joseph's College of Commerce and Bangalore University, before being chosen to play for the junior team of his State, Karnataka. In 2010, he captained the side to the nationals title in Pune, defeating hockey Punjab in the final. [4] Playing for the senior team in 2011 at the National Championships, he was named the Best Player; his side finished second. [5]
Uthappa made his international debut against South Africa on 16 January 2012 at the first match of a five-match series, in Delhi. [6] He scored a goal in the game, in the 53rd minute. He featured in four of the five games and scored a total of three goals. He was then picked to play at the 2012 Olympics Qualification Tournament and appeared in all of the six games, scoring one goal, against Singapore.
Uthappa captained the side for the first time at the 2016 Asian Champions Trophy in Malaysia, in a league game against Pakistan, in the process of rotation of captaincy the team followed after the 2016 Rio Olympics. His side won the game 3–2. [7]
In the inaugural edition of the Hockey India League in 2013, Uthappa was picked up by the Uttar Pradesh Wizards franchise. He played for three editions of the tournament, till 2015. In the 2013 season, the team finished third. For the 2016 season, he was bought by Kalinga Lancers for US$54,000. [8] The side finished second. The team won the season in 2017, beating Dabang Mumbai in the final.

On 22 March 2012, he was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha as one of the three Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidates to the Upper House of Indian Parliament. Previously, Dilip Tirkey was working as chairman of Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC), now he is working as the chairman of Odisha Hockey Promotion Council. In September 2022, he was elected unopposed to the position of the president of Hockey India. He is the first ever international hockey player to become President of Hockey India Dilip Tirkey Sports Research Development Foundation short and abbreviated as DTSRD is an initiative of Padma Shri Dilip Tirkey. DTSRD has its registered office in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Dibakar Parichha serves as the Secretary-General of DTSRD while Prime Abhilas is the Managing Director of DTSRD. Cricket is by far the most popular sport in Karnataka with International cricket matches attracting a sizeable number of spectators who are willing to pay more than the standard ticket price to get a chance to watch the match. The sports related infrastructure is mainly concentrated in Bangalore which also played host to the 4th National Games of India in the year 1997. He is primarily a right-handed middle-order batsman representing Karnataka in domestic cricket and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He played as an opening batsman for his former IPL team, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, and became the first Indian player to score a century in the IPL in 2009 Indian Premier League.
Moritz Fürste is a German field hockey player. He was a member of the Men's National Team that won the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics and 2012 Summer Olympics as well as at the 2006 World Cup. He played at the Uhlenhorster Hockey Club in Hamburg from 1989 till 2012. He was captain of the team. He has guided his team to success in the Euro Hockey League on three occasions, winning the title in 2007–08, 2009–10 and 2011–12. Fürste also helped his team to a second-place finish in the competition in the 2008–09 Season, when they were defeated by HC Bloemendaal of The Netherlands. Since 2012 he is playing at Spanish Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. After retiring after season 2018-2019 he just signed a new deal with Royal Beerschot THC in Belgium for 1 season.

Hockey India League (HIL), known as the Coal India Hockey India League is a professional field hockey league in India. The league is organized by Hockey India, the governing body for the sport in India. HIL, along with the Indian Premier League, Indian Super League, and Pro Kabaddi League, is considered one of the major sports leagues in the country. HIL consists of six teams, with the regular season lasting two months from January to February, with each team playing 10 games. The top four teams at the end of the season move into the play-offs, where the championship game decides the Hockey India League winner.

Kalinga Lancers beat Dabang Mumbai 4–1 in the final to win their first title. Six teams played 34 matches in six venues with final played in Sector 42 Stadium, Chandigarh. The prize money was announced to be 3 crores INR.
