Kodagu district is an administrative district in the Karnataka state of India. Before 1956, it was an administratively separate Coorg State, at which point it was merged into an enlarged Mysore State.

The passion for hockey in Kodagu is so much that more than 200 families participate in an annual hockey festival. This festival is recognised as one of the largest field hockey tournaments in the world and has been referred to the Guinness Book of Records. However it has already found a mention in the Limca Book of Records, which is an Indian variant of the Guinness Book.
Manish Krishnanand Pandey is an Indian international cricketer. He is primarily a right-handed middle-order batsman representing Karnataka in domestic cricket and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He played as an opening batsman for his former IPL team, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, and became the first Indian player to score a century in the IPL in 2009 Indian Premier League. He was a part of the Indian squad which won the 2018 Asia Cup.

He represented India in 275 international matches in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the 1990 World cup, 3 Champions Trophy tournaments, 2 Asian Games and 2 Asia Cups. Ballal became a household name in India when he saved two tie-breaker goals in the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games final against South Korea. India, captained by Ballal, went on to win the Asiad hockey gold at Bangkok after a gap of 32 years.

Gurkeerat Singh Mann is a former Indian professional cricketer who played for Punjab in domestic cricket. On 10 November 2023 he announced retirement from all cricket.
Somwarpet Vittalacharya Sunil is an Indian former field hockey player who played for the Indian national team. He represented India during the 2012 London Olympics and won silver with them at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He received the Arjun Award in 2017.
