Bangalore University (BU) is a public state university located in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The university is a part of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and affiliated by University Grants Commission (UGC). Bangalore University is accredited by the NAAC with grade A++ in 2023 under the new grading system. [2] Bangalore University was trifurcated into Bengaluru City University and Bengaluru North University. [3]

Governance

Dr Jayakar S M is the current Vice Chancellor appointed on 11 July 2022. Dr Cynthia Menezes Prabhu was the temporary Vice-Chancellor during June – July 2022. Dr Venugopal K R. was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University on 12 June 2018 and his tenure ended on 10 June 2022. Dr. Venugopal K R, UVCE Alumni, Principal UVCE was the Special Officer to the Government of Karnataka for Trifurcating Bangalore University. He submitted the report on 26 March 2015 for restructuring Bangalore University into Bangalore University, Bengaluru City University and Bengaluru North University and UVCE to be carved out as Center of Excellence on the model of Indian Institute of Technology. Former Vice-Chancellor (VC) was Prabhu Dev. He resigned on 13 October 2012 to accept the Karnataka government's offer of chairmanship of the Karnataka Health System Commission. [4] H.N. Ramesh was appointed as VC temporarily till new VC is appointed by the state [5]

With more than 650 affiliated colleges, the Karnataka government has decided to bifurcate, or 'carve out a new university' to ease management. To this effect, the state government had appointed two study groups. One group was headed by former Gulbarga University Vice-Chancellor N Rudraiah and another was a group formed by the Karnataka State Higher Education Council. [6] The Rudraiah study suggested trifurcation of the university, while the Council suggested bifurcation.

Academics

The university is structured into six faculties- Arts, Science, Commerce & Management, Education, Law and Engineering. It has 43 Post Graduate Departments, a Postgraduate Centre at Kolar, (Started during 1994–95), three constituent colleges, 665 affiliated colleges (of which 115 have PG Courses) and several other Centres and Directorates of higher learning and research under its purview. At present, the university offers 50 Post Graduate Courses and Employment Oriented Diploma and Certificate Courses. The university has launched the five-year Integrated Courses in Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Business Studies and four-year B.S. programme. [10]

The NIRF ranked it 98th [12] overall and 64th [13] among universities in the 2022 rankings, but it has not appeared in the 2023 rankings.

In 2001, the university was accredited by NAAC and received Five Star Status. In 2016, The university then once again was reaccredited with an A grade under the new grading system. [14]

In a first, the university in 2010 announced admissions for transgender people by reserving one seat in each PG course. [15] Now, the university's admission forms feature a third category of gender, namely 'Others'. [16]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering</span> Government engineering college in Bangalore, India

University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) was established in 1917, under the name Government Engineering College, by Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya. It is the 5th engineering college to be established in the country and 1st in Karnataka. UVCE is one of the few technical institutions in the country that is vested with the status of a university and autonomy on the lines of IITs. It is one of the oldest technical institutions in the country, imparting technical education leading to B.Tech., B. Arch., M.Tech., M. Arch. and PhD degrees in the various disciplines of Engineering and Architecture. The college is approved by the AICTE and the Government of Karnataka. UVCE has secured an NAAC accreditation score of 3.75. UVCE, while a constituent college of Bangalore University until 2022, secured an NIRF ranking of 64. The college used to receive financial aid under the TEQIP program from the World Bank.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">University of Mysore</span> State University in Karnataka

The University of Mysore is a public state university in Mysore, Karnataka, India. The university was founded during the reign of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and the premiership of Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission for offering higher studies degree courses on-campus as well as online. It was inaugurated on 27 July 1916. Its first chancellor was the maharaja himself; the first Vice-Chancellor was H. V. Nanjundaiah. This was the first university outside of British administered Indian provinces, the sixth in the Indian subcontinent as a whole, and the first in Karnataka. It is a state university of the affiliating type, and was deemed autonomous within the Republic of India on 3 March 1956, when it gained recognition from the University Grants Commission.

Central College Bengaluru (1858) is one of the oldest colleges in India. This college was originally affiliated to University of Mysore in Mysore State. Rev. John Garrett was the founder and first principal of the Central High School, which was afterwards renamed Central College. In 1964, with the reorganization of the Indian state and the formation of Karnataka, Central College was transferred to Bangalore University, a new university formed in 1965 to meet the needs of the people of Bengaluru. Venugopal Kuppanna Rajuk known as Venugopal K. R. (VKR) was born on 26 March 1956 in Bangalore. His father, Muniswamappa Kuppanna, a farmer worked in Indian Telephone Industries Bangalore, mother Narayanappa Muniyamma was a home maker. He was former Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University, Principal of University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), He was also the chairman, Department of Electronics and Communication, Computer Science Engineering and Information Science Engineering in University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE). He has served UVCE as well as Bangalore University for the last five decades. UVCE has been affiliated to Bangalore University since 1964. Dr. Venugopal K R was the Special Officer to the Government of Karnataka for Trifurcating Bangalore University. He submitted the report on 26 March 2015 for restructuring Bangalore University into Bangalore University, Bengaluru City University and Bengaluru North University and UVCE to be carved out as Center of Excellence on the model of Indian Institute of Technology. UVCE was granted autonomy by a bill tabled in Karnataka assembly and now UVCE is an autonomous institution with effect from 25 March 2022.
