Mangalore University commonly known as, MU is a public university in Konaje, Mangaluru, Karnataka, India. [2] In 2021, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded Mangalore University 'B' grade. [3] [4]

As on 2024, Prof. P L Dharma took charge of the university as Vice Chancellor. [5]

History

Mangalore University was established in 1980 with jurisdiction over the districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu. [2]

Academics

Established with only three post-graduate departments, Mangalore University now has 26 post-graduate departments. Mangalore university has two constituent colleges, five autonomous colleges and more than 200 affiliated colleges. [6] [2] The university also has a post-graduate centre at Chikka Aluvara, Kushalanagar. [7]

In 2023 Mangalore University went from A to B grade in NAAC University rankings. [8]

Research Centres

Controversy

The University faces a severe financial crunch and is on the verge of closing down various courses. [26] Religious festival celebrations under Acting vice-chancellor Jairaj Amin sparked widespread protests as students demanded that university remain a place for learning, not religion. [27]

In January 2024 the Enforcement Directorate raided the office of the Vice Chancellor and registrar in connection with a Rs 150 cr recruitment scam in Kolar-Chikkaballapura District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited (KOMUL). [28] [29]

At the start of 2024 about 129 teaching posts remained vacant at the university. [30] [31] In a move to further hide transparency, the university syndicate decided to stop live streaming of meetings. [32]

Due to poor resource management, the University is closing down multiple post graduate courses. [33] Evening college courses have been discontinued. [34] Facing multiple issues, the ABVP union created a protest forcing the university to address them. [35]

The University of Mysore is a public state university in Mysore, Karnataka, India. The university was founded during the reign of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and the premiership of Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission for offering higher studies degree courses on-campus as well as online. It was inaugurated on 27 July 1916. Its first chancellor was the maharaja himself; the first Vice-Chancellor was H. V. Nanjundaiah. This was the first university outside of British administered Indian provinces, the sixth in the Indian subcontinent as a whole, and the first in Karnataka. It is a state university of the affiliating type, and was deemed autonomous within the Republic of India on 3 March 1956, when it gained recognition from the University Grants Commission.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Siddaramaiah</span> 22nd and current Chief minister of Karnataka

Siddaramaiah, also referred to by his nickname Siddu, or Siddramullaha Khan is an Indian politician who is serving as the 22nd chief minister of Karnataka from 20 May 2023. He also held that position previously from 2013 to 2018, being only the second person to hold that office for a full five-year term. He belongs to the Indian National Congress and is presently the leader of the Congress Legislative Party. He represented the Varuna Assembly constituency from 2023, previously from 2008 to 2018, Badami Assembly constituency from 2018 to 2023, and Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency from 2004 to 2007, 1994 to 1999, and from 1983 to 1989 in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He served as the deputy chief minister of Karnataka from 1996 to 1999 and from 2004 to 2005 while he was a member of the Janata Dal and Janata Dal (Secular). He also served as the leader of the opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on two occasions, from 2019 to 2023 and from 2009 to 2013. Siddaramaiah was a member of various Janata Parivar factions for several years.

Tulu cinema, also known as Coastalwood, is a part of Indian cinema. The Tulu film industry produces five to seven films annually. The first Tulu film was Enna Thangadi released in 1971. Earlier, these films were released in theatres across the Tulu Nadu region. Tulu film industry has grown to such an extent that films are being released simultaneously in Mangalore, Udupi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Middle East. The critically acclaimed Tulu film Suddha won the award for the best Indian Film at the Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema held in New Delhi in 2006. In 2011, the Tulu film Industry got a second lease of life with the release of the film Oriyardori Asal. The film turned out to be the biggest hit in Tulu film history to date. Chaali Polilu is the longest running film in Tulu film industry. This movie is the highest-grossing film in the Tulu film industry. It has successfully completed 470 days at PVR Cinemas in Mangalore.
