Mangalore University commonly known as, MU is a public university in Konaje, Mangaluru, Karnataka, India. [2] In 2021, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded Mangalore University 'B' grade. [3] [4]

History

Mangalore University was established in 1980 with jurisdiction over the districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu. [2]

Academics

Established with only three post-graduate departments, Mangalore University now has 26 post-graduate departments. Mangalore university has two constituent colleges, five autonomous colleges and more than 200 affiliated colleges. [6] [2] The university also has a post-graduate centre at Chikka Aluvara, Kushalanagar. [7]

In 2023 Mangalore University went from A to B grade in NAAC University rankings. [8]

Controversy

Religious festival celebrations under Acting vice-chancellor Jairaj Amin sparked widespread protests as students demanded that university remain a place for learning, not religion. [24]

In January 2024 the Enforcement Directorate raided the office of the Vice Chancellor and registrar in connection with a Rs 150 cr recruitment scam in Kolar-Chikkaballapura District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited (KOMUL). [25] [26]

Acting VC Jairaj Amin was also involved in a fight where he assaulted retired Prof. Rajaram Tolpady in broad daylight on the campus. [27] [28]

At the start of 2024 about 129 teaching posts remained vacant at the university. [29] [30]

In a move to further hide transparency, the university syndicate decided to stop live streaming of meetings. [31]

The University of Mysore is a public state university in Mysore, Karnataka, India. The university was founded during the reign of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and the premiership of Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission for offering higher studies degree courses on-campus as well as online. It was inaugurated on 27 July 1916. Its first chancellor was the maharaja himself; the first Vice-Chancellor was H. V. Nanjundaiah. This was the first university outside of British administered Indian provinces, the sixth in the Indian subcontinent as a whole, and the first in Karnataka. It is a state university of the affiliating type, and was deemed autonomous within the Republic of India on 3 March 1956, when it gained recognition from the University Grants Commission.

Ullal Srinivasa Mallya was an Indian politician. He served an 18-year tenure as a member of Parliament, from 1946–1965. He played a key role in development of undivided Dakshina Kannada.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tulu cinema</span> Tulu language film industry

Tulu cinema, also known as Coastalwood, is a part of Indian cinema. The Tulu film industry produces five to seven films annually. The first Tulu film was Enna Thangadi released in 1971. Earlier, these films were released in theatres across the Tulu Nadu region. Tulu film industry has grown to such an extent that films are being released simultaneously in Mangalore, Udupi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Middle East. The critically acclaimed Tulu film Suddha won the award for the best Indian Film at the Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema held in New Delhi in 2006. In 2011, the Tulu film Industry got a second lease of life with the release of the film Oriyardori Asal. The film turned out to be the biggest hit in Tulu film history to date. Chaali Polilu is the longest running film in Tulu film industry. This movie is the highest-grossing film in the Tulu film industry. It has successfully completed 470 days at PVR Cinemas in Mangalore.

Dayananda Pai is an Indian billionaire real estate developer, philanthropist and educationist in Bangalore, India. He is a managing trustee and board trustee of B.M.S college and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and is the syndicate member of Manipal University and the National Institute of Technology, Surathkal and a former syndicate member of Mangalore University. Pai was awarded the Karnataka Udyog award and the Karnataka Rajyotsva award for social and charitable activities. He was conferred an honorary doctorate by Mangalore University for his exceptional contribution to the field of education and philanthropy.

U S Mallya Indoor Stadium is situated at Mangalore in India. It offers sporting facilities for Badminton and Basketball. The stadium is named after U. Srinivas Mallya.

Sacred Hearts' School is a school situated at Kulshekar locality in Mangalore city of Karnataka state in India. It was established on 31 May 1943. This school is run by the Bethany Educational Society.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Edmond Fernandes</span> Indian physician

Edmond Clint Fernandes is an Indian physician having public health expertise and a consultant for the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). He is the Founder and CEO of CHD Group, an Indian non-profit global health organization holding United Nations Economic and Social Council special consultative Status. Fernandes is the director of the Edward & Cynthia Institute of Public Health, an advanced technical co-operation centre with Yenepoya, and a member of the Health Task Force, Disaster Management Authority, Government of Karnataka.

P. Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya is an Indian academic. He served as vice-chancellor of Mangalore University for four years from June 2019 until June 2023. He belongs to the Shivalli Madhwa Brahmin community. Subramanya Yadapadithaya was a professor in the department of commerce in Mangalore University before assuming office as vice chancellor As first batch student, he secured first rank and gold medal in master of commerce in 1982 from Mangalore University and completed his Phd in 1992. P.Subramanya Yadapadithaya is the first alumni of the university to occupy the position of vice chancellor. He was presented best vice chancellor award on 27 August 2022 during the second Higher Education and Innovation Summit held at New Delhi.
