The 2016 Women's Water Polo Olympic Qualification Tournament was held at the Groenhovenbad in Gouda, Netherlands, from 21 to 28 March 2016. [1] [2] The top four teams advanced to the Olympics. The mascot of the event was an orange lion in blue clothes called Swimba.
The water polo tournaments at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 20 August at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center in Barra da Tijuca. Twenty teams competed in the tournament. Games that ended in ties in elimination rounds were decided by shootouts, as overtime has been abolished since 2013.
Groenhovenbad is an aquatic centre in Gouda, the Netherlands. It hosted from 21-28 March the 2016 Women's Water Polo Olympic Games Qualification Tournament.
Gouda is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland, Netherlands with a population of 72,338. It is famous for its Gouda cheese, stroopwafels, many grachten, smoking pipes, and its 15th-century city hall. Gouda's array of historic churches and other buildings makes it a very popular day trip destination.
There were 12 places originally allocated to continental associations in the tournament not already directly qualified to the Olympics – 7 from Europe, 2 from the Americas, 1 from Asia, 1 from Africa, and 1 from Oceania.

The 2016 Men's Water Polo Olympic Qualification Tournament was held in Trieste, Italy, from 3 to 10 April 2016, at the Polo Natatorio "Bruno Bianchi". The top four teams advanced to the Olympics.
Brazil was the host nation of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's twenty-second appearance at the Summer Olympics, having competed in all editions in the modern era from 1920 onwards, except the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. This was the fourth time world rankings were used but the first time that the championships three years prior was used as the final determination.
